An active shooter at a middle school in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, was ‘neutralized’ by police who stopped the individual from breaking inside the campus.

Cops responded to reports of a suspect armed with a rifle at Mt Horeb Middle School on Wednesday morning.

The Mount Horeb Area School District wrote on Facebook: ‘The individual did not breach entryway. Police department is helping to scope out our building to ensure the safety of our students and staff.’

As of 11.16am, the entire school district was on full lockdown.

‘Please do not come onto school campus. We will direct you with further instructions as soon as possible,’ stated the district.

‘The safety and security of our students and staff is paramount. We are following our emergency protocols. We will update you when we have more information to share.’

An emergency alert sent by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office stated there was an active shooter on the 900 block of East Garfield Street.

In another updated the school district wrote that law enforcement officials were ‘circulating throughout the middle school to confirm the safety of all students’.

An initial search of the campus did not ‘has not yielded additional suspects’, said the district at 12.08pm.

‘As importantly, we have no reports of individuals being harmed, with the exception of the alleged assailant,’ the district added.

There was no threat at the intermediate center, where students were being evacuated to go to buses and be taken to a reunification site. Middle school students were allowed to use restrooms in the interior of the campus but were not immediately released.

At 1.45pm, the school district announced that local police had given permission for intermediate center students to reunify with their families. The district also ensured that middle school students and staff ‘remain safe’ as dismissal for them remained on hold.

‘You would be so proud of our students and staff, and we’re so grateful for our first responders,’ wrote the district.
