Around 12 murderers, eight rapists and more than 100 guilty of drugs or firearm offences are due to be deported to Albania to serve the remainder of their sentence

Albanian criminals convicted in the UK are being sent to do their time in their home country – where prisons have love-making rooms.

Lags transferred to the country’s jails can enjoy four hours a month in bed with their other halves, unlike here where conjugal visits are not allowed. 

Our revelation comes as some 200 villains – including murderers and rapists – are set to be moved to cushy lock-ups in Albania under an arrangement with the UK Government.

According to their jail regulations: “Every prison must have a special facility for the spouse meetings. 

“Such a facilities must have beds and sheets which must be changed at the end of each meeting.” The rules add: “The extended visits are allowed for the sentenced person who is married or cohabiting according to the Code of Family after the wife has been screened from the police.”

Other perks include weekly food and clothes parcels from family, personal cooking facilities and up to seven days’ leave for good behaviour. Some lags will even land softer sentences.

Those repatriated include a drug kingpin who was moved to a jail in
Albanian capital Tirana two weeks ago. Erald Mema, 39, was handed 25 years by a judge at Oxford Crown Court in October 2018 for a huge cocaine racket. He is among scores of Albanian nationals given the option to transfer to facilities back home under a scheme to repatriate dangerous lags.

Around 12 murderers, eight rapists and more than 100 guilty of drugs or firearm offences are expected to be returned to serve the rest of their sentences. 

Some will serve less time than if they had remained in the UK, as sentences are adjusted to the penalty they would have received from the justice system in Albania. In some cases this is lower but in UK prisons cons are freed halfway through on licence to free up places.

Announcing the agreement last year, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk said: “The public expects foreign criminals should serve their sentences overseas — not in our prisons at the expense of the taxpayer.

“This deal will speed up the removal of offenders and give victims confidence serious criminals will continue to face justice.”

The Ministry of Justice said: “Once deported, for-eign nationals serve time in the custody – and under the rules – of their home state”.
