Emergency services and a bomb squad are currently at a flat in Dingle, Liverpool near a Tesco supermarket after a warrant was carried out by Merseyside Police

Homes and business have been evacuated and a bomb squad called in after a "substance" was found in a flat.

Emergency services are currently at an address near a Tesco supermarket in Dingle, Liverpool after a warrant was carried out by Merseyside Police. Police searched the flat and found a substance that "requires further examination." The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) have been called to assist with its safe disposal, and specialist officers have been spotted walking behind a police cordon.

Residents are being turned away from the scene by police. Police said a number of businesses and residences have been evacuated while emergency services deal with the incident, reports the Echo. Motorists and pedestrians have been advised to avoid the area while the incident is ongoing.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Emergency services are currently in attendance at a flat on Ellis Place, in Liverpool, this afternoon (Friday 19 April). A warrant was carried out by Merseyside Police at the flat and a subsequent search found a substance which requires further examination. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) have been called to assist with its safe disposal. A cordon has been put in place and a number of businesses and residences have been evacuated while emergency services deal with the incident. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area while the incident is ongoing."

Several roads have also been closed in the Dingle area, and bus diversions have been put in place. Pictures from the scene show a police van and tape blocking off a section of road. Arriva said: "Due to police incident at Tesco on Park Road. Services 82 and 82A will temporarily divert via Ullet Rd, Devonshire Rd, Princes Ave and Parliament St in both directions until cleared." One nearby road, Park Road, appeared to have partially opened at around 6pm.
