Human torso found in nature reserve bag ’belonged to man older than 40’
Police have confirmed that the human remains found in Kersal Wetlands in Manchester likely belonged to a man in his 40s - officials are using ’all forensic techniques available to identify him’
Police investigating the mystery behind a human torso that was dumped in Manchester have revealed that the body likely belonged to a man in his 40s.
Greater Manchester Police were first seen in a woodland area after they were called to reports of an "unknown item" at Kersal Wetlands at around 5.50pm on Thursday. They later confirmed that human remains were found wrapped in plastic. Officials said that no other remains have been found at this time.
Frightened locals earlier said the body was found close to their family homes. One woman, whose house is located within the police cordon, said: "It is scary, it really is. Of course it’s very shocking but unfortunately we’re a bit immune to seeing police around. Kids could have come across it. It’s very scary." Another person said: “It makes me feel scared. It’s horrible. Who knows who’s been near us.”
Chief Superintendent Tony Creely, district commander for Salford, adressed the tragedy and said the "victim is a man who could not have survived." He explained that police are working around the clock to identify him following the latest development with forensic examinations. Tests took place on Friday and revealed that the man had only been dead for a matter of days. DNA tests are currently underway to help identify the victim.
Creely said: "This is a tragic case which is moving at pace and, thanks to forensic tests, we are able to confirm that the victim is a man who could not have survived. At the heart of our investigation is this man and his family. We are using all forensic techniques available to identify him as soon as we can so we are able to support his loved ones during this devastating time.
“I would like to thank the public for their cooperation in the last few days. The presence of our officers and specialist teams will have caused disruption in the local area – and may continue to for some time yet – but we value any information they have been able to pass to us. There remain a number of unknowns around this case, but we are working diligently and respectfully to provide answers as soon as we are able. This will take time and we will continue to provide updates of significance when we can.”
