PGA Tour star Adam Hadwin let out a furious outburst on the final hole of his opening round at the Players Championship on Thursday, launching his club into a lake.

After an up-and-down front nine, Hadwin found some form following the turn, making three birdies in seven holes to leave him at level-par with two holes to play. He then found himself on the iconic 17th tee, and like many before him, Hadwin missed the green short, sinking his tee shot into the water.

A penalty shot then followed before he went on to a double bogey, undoing his hard work on the back nine. Unfortunately for the Canadian, his troubles with the Sawgrass water hazards were far from over.

His tee shot at the final hole of the day nearly followed the same fate, but fortunately his ball grabbed in the left-hand-side rough, to ensure it finished just a few feet away from the hazard. Having received the break though, Hadwin failed to capitalise as his second shot was over-hooked, rolling off the green and into the water.

Less than impressed with his mistake, the PGA Tour star opted to take it out on his golf club, throwing it deep into the water before trundling up to the green. A drop green-side followed, before he managed to get up and down to limit the damage to a bogey, ending the opening round three-over-par.

Punishments for club throwing on the PGA Tour remains somewhat of a grey area, and it is known if Hadwin will face sanctioning from the powers that be for his actions. One man who has been punished for club throwing in the past on the PGA Tour is four-time major winner Rory McIlroy.

McIlroy vented his frustrations in the same way as Hadwin at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in 2015, launching a three iron into a water hazard after miss-executing his shot. "I just let frustration get the better of me," McIlroy said at the time.

"It was heat of the moment and if it had been any other club I probably wouldn’t have but I didn’t need a three-iron for the rest of the round so I thought, why not? Looking back at it, that wasn’t one of my proudest moments."

It was later revealed that McIlroy was handed a £20,000 ($25k) fine. Fortunately for McIlroy this was later reduced to £4,000 ($5k), after the European star issued an apology for his club-throwing antics on live TV in the aftermath. Hadwin will be hoping he can escape a similar punishment at TPC Sawgrass, whilst also finding some form in round two, with the Canadian requiring an impressive showing on Friday to make it to the weekend.
