Lizzie Cundy has lashed out at vile online trolls who continue to target Princess Catherine.

The Princess of Wales has been under fire from social media users and critics after sharing a snap on Mother's Day alongside her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. But users instantly noticed inconsistencies in the snap. It later emerged that several leading picture agencies had issued an urgent 'Kill notice', having spotted that the image had been edited.

Just one day later, the Princess, 42, who is currently recovering from planned abdominal surgery in January issued a rare statement, explaining that as an amateur photographer, she often experiments with editing images. But socialite and telly star Lizzie Cundy, 55, who was once pals with Catherine's sister-in-law, Meghan Markle has urged trolls to back down.

She told the Mirror: "Enough is enough, leave Catherine alone. This is a storm in a teacup, this poor woman has gone through so much, she's gone through surgery and she's trying to get better, she was under pressure to give a picture for Mother's Day. It's very difficult being ill and imagine trying to get a photograph with all three children laughing and smiling at the camera all at once.

"Let's give her a break and wish her well. All she wanted was to wish everyone a special Mother's Day. Let's be honest, we've all done a little bit of editing, filtering, a huge percentage of people on Facebook and Instagram do this – even Meghan Markle does Photoshop, you can't say she didn't."

The TalkTV star said: "I hate the fact Catherine is ill and they're (the public) weighing in with their opinion, we're only interested in Catherine's return to health. As someone who does Photoshop, let's leave her alone!" While the Princess has since remained tight-lipped after making her rare comment on the editing blunder, she has previously addressed how she deals with criticism.

Prince William and Catherine gave a rare interview with ITV's Tom Bradby shortly after their engagement was announced in October 2010. Mr Brady asked her: "You have said your family are very close, does it hurt about what's said or do you let it run off all your collective backs on the grounds that's just what you have to live with?"

The Princess replied: "Again I think, the people around home are very supportive to us and those are the people who really matter to us, our close friends and close family. I think if they feel you are doing the right thing you can only be true to yourself and you sort of have to ignore a lot of what's said, obviously take it on board, but you have to be yourself really and that's how I have stuck by it really." The princess added that it was "nerve-wracking" marrying into the Royal Family but said she is "willing to learn quickly and work hard."
