Dave Myer's heartbreaking words about looking to the future before death

The Hairy Bikers viewers were left devastated on Tuesday as the latest episode ended with a tribute to Dave Myers - while he also delivered a monologue about optimism and hope.

The TV chef sadly passed away last month at the age of 66 following a brave battle against cancer. His death came in the midst of the BBC airing the latest series about his travels around the UK with his co-star Si King, 57. The pair had travelled around parts of the West of the UK for their show The Hairy Bikers Go West.

Their travels took them to major cities including Manchester and Newport - while the latest episode saw them ride to Bristol. The pair were delighted by the culinary delights they uncovered in the city - which has historic links to trade routes brining a range of flavours to the UK.

As the episode that aired on Tuesday came to a close, Dave became reflective on the foods he had discovered while travelling around the UK - and also of the fresh memories he and Si had created together by making the show. He ended the episode by opening up about his hopes for the future and said he felt optimistic for the UK food scene.

He said: “It’s the most wonderful snapshot of the West Country. This part, you know? We started off in Newport. I didn’t know that Newport was a foodie destination. Of course, we get into Bristol, and then the world just opens, you know, there’s memories here, a lot of memories for both of us.

“But what’s lovely is the optimism of looking forward, and certainly on the food front. It’s veery, very exciting and very optimistic. We’ve got the best of the past and the best of the future.”

His words hit harder as the news of his tragic death broke just two weeks previously. And the very end of the episode included a tribute card in honour of the star. The credits rolled and then an image of Dave was displayed along with a statement reading: “In loving memory of our friend, Dave Myers. 1957 - 2024.”

Fans watching the show at home were touched by the scenes, with one writing on X: "Watching the hairy bikers, such a warm end for Dave. You can tell that Si is looking after him and they are loving spending the time together."

Another wrote: "Never commented at the time but this pair have been such an inspiration and given such entertainment. Every time I use my Hairy Bikers frying pan I will think of you, Dave! I hope he enjoyed his life as much as I enjoyed those little 1 hour windows into it on the tellybox."

And a further fan commented: "Watching Hairy Bikers goes West again, I'm glad Dave Myers got to eat all those yummy goodies before he passed, his time was spent well enjoying things like oozy middle melting caramalised white chocolate buscuits."

News of Dave’s death broke at the end of February, when his beloved wife Liliana Orzac shared a heartbreaking tribute on Facebook alongside a collection of pictures of her late husband, penning: "Rest in peace, my love. My wonderful, brave man! Till next time we meet!" And in a statement of his own, Si wrote: "[My] best friend is on a journey that for now, I can’t follow... I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime."
