A jealous dad who injected himself with testosterone and left his girlfriend fearing for her life after he suffocated her during an horrific attack has been spared jail.

Owen Bott, 24, lost his temper after seeing messages on his partner's phone from a different individual, and so he sat on the woman's chest and pinned her to the ground. A court heard Bott then put his hands over her mouth and asked her how many people she had slept with.

The thug told her: "You are going to die, I am going to kill you," leaving the woman scared she would die. However, Bott was spared immediate jail at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on Monday after a judge suspended his 20-month prison sentence for 18 months.

Sentencing Bott, Judge Graeme Smith said: "Your relationship with your victim was a difficult one and culminated in this very nasty incident. But I accept that she has on a number of occasions continued to contact you and it is for that reason and the period of time since that I am not going to impose a restraining order.

"You have been frank. You did snap as a result of what you saw on the phone. You accept responsibility for it. It was a serious and sustained assault involving the suffocation of her while you were sat on top of her with your hands over her mouth. This was a nasty and vindictive offence."

Bott had been a relationship with his victim for five years. The father lost his temper after taking testosterone when he saw the messages on the woman's phone on March 27, 2022.

Laura Rowe, prosecuting, said: "On March 27, 2022 Bott injected himself with testosterone which made him aggressive towards her. The victim had been at work until 10pm on March 26 and went to a friend's house before returning home at 11.30pm. She had not heard him return.

"She woke at 7am to the defendant screaming as he had been on her phone. He had seen some messages on her phone involving a different individual. He lost his temper. He pushed her on the bed every time she tried to get up.

The victim was crying. He called her vile words. The victim tried to snatch her phone out of his hands. He put her in a headlock. She squeezed his testicles. He released her and went to the bathroom with her phone.

"She contacted the police with his phone. The defendant came downstairs and dragged her off the sofa onto the carpet, giving her carpet burns. He sat on her chest and pinned her to the ground. He put his hands over her mouth and asked her how many people she had slept with.

"When he was suffocating her he said, 'You are going to die, I am going to kill you'. The victim was trying to push him off her. He got off her. She felt he was going to kill her.

"He left and the victim left through the back door. She drove her car down the road and contacted the police. The defendant saw the victim. He put his ear to the window to hear the conversation with the police."

The court heard the victim was left with bleeding to her right ear, bruising to her upper lip, right cheek, left cheek, elbow, forearm, neck and arm, reports Stoke-on-Trent Live. Bott, from Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Caroline Harris, defending, said Bott is a hard-working man who was co-operative with the police. She said: "He has committed a very unpleasant offence. He acknowledges that."

As part of the suspended sentence Bott must complete a Building Better Relationships course, a rehabilitation activity requirement for 35 days and 140 hours unpaid work.
