Robert Downey Jr. has been slammed by fans as “rude” for ignoring Ke Huy Quan after winning his first ever Oscar.

The Iron Man star, 58, won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor on Sunday for his portrayal of Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s epic Oppenheimer, which swept the board at the star-studded ceremony on Sunday. But while the focus should have been on the former troubled actor winning the major acting accolade for the first time, fans focused instead on his awkward interaction with Everything Everywhere All at Once actor Ke Huy Quan.

The former Goonies star presented the award for Best Supporting Actor alongside four other previous winners of the honour, including Robert’s Iron Man 2 co-star Sam Rockwell, but eagle-eyed viewers noticed he was brushed aside by the ex-Marvel star, even as he handed him the gold statue and the winning envelope. As the newly-crowned actor walked to the stage, he did not make eye contact with Quan, and instead shook hands with Tim Robbins and fistbumped Sam, and ignored the Loki star who was holding the Oscar and envelope.

Fans were not impressed with his seemingly arrogant behaviour, and took to social media to complain about the Hollywood star. “Robert downey jr. could’ve took one second or even acknowledge Ke Huy Quan while on stage, who was presenting an award to him personally… this s**t was so disrespectful idc,” one fumed. “Did he just completely ignore Ke Huy Quan that announced the winner?” another chimed in.”Robert Downey Jr not hugging Ke Huy Quan??? excuse me,” a third fired.

While others compared Robert’s behaviour onstage to his Oppenheimer co-star Cillian Murphy, who won one of the biggest awards of the night, Best Actor, for his portrayal of the eponymous physicist in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster. “Didn't shake his hand, didn't even look at him. You can easily tell Cillian Murphy is a complete CLASS act compared to Robert Downey. Cillian enthusiastically shakes everyone's hand. Not surprised, Cillian has always had a humble & down-to-earth personality, Downey seems arrogant,” one furious fan tweeted.

“Hmph. It's the lack of eye contact to Ke Huy Quan for me. But it wasn't only the lack of eye contact, it was his whole physical demeanor, carriage. It, for me, made his speech a bit less meaningful. For me,” another added. Robert was also compared to Taylor Swift, who seemingly ignored music icon Celine Dio at the Grammys last month. “It's Taylor and Celine all over again. Can we not learn FROM THE PAST?!??” one quipped. “Yep, he pulled a "Taylor". Money clearly didn't buy either of them class!” another fumed.

However, some of Robert’s fans defended the Avengers star, and suggested it might have been overwhelming for him to acknowledge everyone on stage after winning his first Oscar. “Come on, I don't think it's intentional. Winning must be pretty overwhelming and it's easy to black out and forget people, the aftershow pics show them shaking hands and hugging,” one tweeted, as another added: “Still love him. I’m sure in that moment your brain leaves your body.”
