Robert Downey Jr. plays multiple roles in trailer for new spy thriller series
Robert Downey Jr. plays multiple roles in the new trailer upcoming new black comedy spy series, The Sympathizer. Launching exclusively on Sky Atlantic later this year, the seven-part limited series is billed as an “espionage thriller and cross-culture satire” about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy known as The Captain.
The HBO Original series takes place during the final days of the Vietnam War as The Captain starts a new life in exile as a refugee in Los Angeles, where he learns that his spying days aren't over. The Sympathizer is based on Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 2015 novel of the same name and also stars Cowboy Bebop’s Hoa Xuande and Emmy-winning Killing Eve star Sandra Oh.
Now-two time BAFTA winner Downey Jr. proves once again that he is so much more than Marvel superhero Tony Stark as he transforms into at least four roles for the series. It comes as the Iron Man star picked up a best supporting actor award for his performance in Oppenehimer at Sunday’s BAFTAs.

The Sympathizer will premiere in the US on HBO on April 14. A UK release date is yet to be announced, but we do know it will air exclusively on Sky Atlantic, which is currently available in a bundle with Sky Glass and Netflix for £14 a month for the first three months.

Sandra Oh is best-known for roles in Grey's Anatomy and Killing EveThe Sympathizer is executive produced by Downey Jr., his wife Susan Downey, acclaimed indie studio A24. Oldboy director Park Chan-wook serves as co-showrunner and executive producer alongside actor-filmmaker Don McKellar.
Sky unveiled the teaser trailer for the series in February, which appears to show Downey Jr. – reportedly playing the series villains – in four different roles. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter last year, Downey Jr. explained how he shaved his head rather than opt for a bald cap for the various costume changes, while Park added how the actor improvised “incredibly witty” dialogue during every take.
“Choosing which take to go with will really [be] the biggest problem that I have as a creator working with him,” he said.
