Greg Rutherford has shared his verdict on Ryan Thomas winning Dancing On Ice over the weekend, after having withdrawn from the competition himself at the last minute.

The latest series of the ITV show concluded on Sunday with its final. During the episode, former Coronation Street cast member Ryan Thomas, 39, and his skating partner Amani Fancy, 26, were announced as this year's winning couple.

Ryan had competed against Made in Chelsea star Miles Nazaire, 28, and radio presenter Adele Roberts, 45, in the episode. Greg, 37, had been due to take part alongside them but the former Olympic athlete withdrew from the final after sustaining an injury just hours beforehand.

Greg took to Instagram on Monday morning to share an update on his recovery. He also took the opportunity to address Ryan - who previously won Celebrity Big Brother - having now been named as the winner of Dancing On Ice.

Alongside a selfie, Greg wrote: "Recovery sort of starts now ... after a pretty rough first night, I'm looking forward to getting everything sorted and sewn up so I can get back to normal. Thank you all so much for your kind messages."

He subsequently shared a post by the ITV show's account on the platform which announced that Ryan and his skating partner Amani had won the latest series. Greg paid tribute to his former colleague, with him writing: "So proud of [Ryan]. He's had his fair share of ups and downs during the process, so to come out winning is utterly spectacular. Well done brother, I'm glad I've got a friend for life in you."

Ryan had mentioned his pal Greg during his acceptance speech in the final. He said: "I'm speechless! I just can't ... it's Amani - I'm happy for her because she's put so much hard work in with me. And listen, Greg, if you're watching this at home... this trophy is for you, mate!"

It had been announced just hours earlier that Greg - who sustained a groin injury earlier in the series - wouldn't be competing in the final. His skating partner Vanessa James, 36, shared the news initially in a post on Instagram.

She wrote: "Unfortunately Greg has sustained a significant injury this morning at rehearsals and won't be able to perform tonight. We are on our way to the hospital for Greg to get examined further and receive the treatment he needs."

Greg later shared a video, in which he said: "Hello, I know this looks very dramatic and everything else. Sadly, I picked up a big injury in rehearsals so I'm on my way to hospital. So I will not be performing on Dancing On Ice tonight. I am devastated but these things happen. So stay tuned, we'll keep you updated. What a nightmare way for this to finish."

The ITV show confirmed the news in its own post on the platform, writing on Sunday: "[Greg] has had to withdraw from Dancing On Ice after sustaining an injury whilst in rehearsals for the final episode of the current series.

"Greg and Vanessa have been such a popular couple this series and have performed some truly memorable routines. We will be helping to support Greg and wish him well with his recovery. We also want to thank him for being such a treasured member of the Dancing on Ice family."
