The royal family will step into the spotlight on Monday - hours after a Mother's Day photo of Kate Middleton and her children was subjected to a 'kill notice' by four major picture agencies over claims it has been "manipulated".

Kensington Palace said that the image was taken last week in Windsor by Prince William . But speculation grew that it had been edited when eagle-eyed fans noticed that the sleeve of Princess Charlotte's arm did not line-up, and questions were also asked about Prince George's unfocused right hand.

Today, Kate Middleton issued a statement apologising for editing it after a barrage of questions about the image, which aides said was taken by Prince William, were raised.

The Princess of Wales apologised for editing a family photograph which was share online and sent to media on Mother’s Day.

In a post, personally signed C for Catherine, she said: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C.”

Now senior members of the family will be out in public today to carry out engagements celebrating Commonwealth Day.

Queen Camilla and Prince William are set to attend the annual Commonwealth Day Service of Celebration at Westminster Abbey at 2.15pm, followed by a Commonwealth Day Reception at Marlborough House.

Monday will also see the Prince of Wales carry out an additional engagement to celebrate the scaling of Earthshot Prize solutions following the launch of the Prize in 2020

William will attend an event celebrating Launchpad, a new online matchmaking platform for Earthshot solutions, which is intended to introduce small-scale inventors ready to save the planet to the investors who can make it happen.

He is set to issue an impassioned plea to would-be funders to save our planet through "collective action" via Launchpad, a new platform created by his Earthshot Prize.

William and Kate have found themselves at the centre of major speculation following the Princess's abdominal surgery in January.

The Mother's Day photo was only the second time she has been seen since leaving hospital - she was pictured being driven by her mum Carole Middleton last week. But the anomalies in the snapshot have only further fuelled ongoing questions.

The Associated Press (AP) Reuters, Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Getty Images all separately issued a "kill notice" to media organisations around the globe, confirming they had each deleted the image from their individual libraries. A notice from the Associated Press read: "At closer inspection it appears that the source has manipulated the image."

It comes after Kensington Palace decided to issue a statement last week, addressing the many theories spreading online about Kate's health. "We were really clear from the start we weren’t going to provide a running commentary on the Princess of Wales ’s health and only provide significant updates," it read.

"Obviously, we've seen the madness of social media and that is not going to change our strategy. There has been much on social media but the Princess has a right to privacy and asks the public to respect that."
