The Royal Family found themselves ruthlessly mocked on social media as the 96th Academy Awards aired, hours on from major photo agencies issuing a "kill notice" on a picture of Kate Middleton and her three children.

Kensington Palace attempted to shut down speculation regarding the mum-of-three on Mother's Day amid her absence from public life, with the official Instagram account for the Prince and Princess of Wales sharing a snap that seemed to show Kate smiling with her kids, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, nine and Prince Louis, five.

But major photo agencies, including Getty Images, removed the snap from their collections just hours on from Kensington Palace releasing it, claiming the image has been manipulated and edited. The agencies also disputed the claim Prince William took the picture this week.

With the scandal breaking just hours before the Oscars kicked off over in L.A, cheeky social media users were quick to poke some fun at the British Royal Family and their alleged poor photoshop skills as the awards show aired. "Oscars delayed so they can incorporate a 'photoshopped Kate Middleton' joke in the opening monologue. #Oscars2024," one Twitter (X) user joked as the ceremony got off to a late start due to pro Palestine protestors calling for a ceasefire outside the Dolby Theatre.

""And the Oscar for Best Photo Editing goes to........" #KateMiddleton," another quipped, as a third jokester went to the effort of putting their own photoshop skills to use and mocked up an Oscars-style announcement revealing "The Kate Middleton Mother's Day Photo by the Royal Family" as the winner of the non-existent Worst Visual Effects" award.

"It’s hard to concentrate on the Oscars when I have to do all this important Kate Middleton research at the same time," one social media commentator mused as the Oscars aired on ITV, with another predicting: "there’s gotta be a Kate Middleton joke at the Oscars tonight right also I have only seen Barbie so we’re riding on vibes and clips tonight." Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel steered clear of any Kate jokes on stage this evening, focusing his attention on Donald Trump instead.

Major photo agencies have issued a 'kill notice' for a picture of Kate Middleton, following claims that the image was edited. The world's leading photo agencies, including The Associated Press (AP), Reuters, Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Getty Images, all separately told media organisations worldwide that they had removed the photo from their collections.

They believe the picture, which Kensington Palace said was taken last week in Windsor and shows Kate with her three children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, nine and Prince Louis, five, had been altered from the original. The Associated Press stated: "At closer inspection it appears that the source has manipulated the image."

Earlier, sharp-eyed Royal fans on social media noticed that Princess Charlotte's sleeve didn't line up correctly. There were also questions about why Prince George's right hand was blurry. Professional photographer Martin Bamford shared the image on X, saying: "Professional photographer here. Look closely at Princess Charlotte's wrist. This is what happens when you composite layers in Photoshop. I'm not speculating on why the photo was edited like this, but it's weird."

The picture, supposedly taken by Prince William, was shared on the couple's joint social media accounts to mark Mother's Day. Kate seemed to write a note saying: "Thank you for your kind wishes and continued support over the last two months. Wishing everyone a Happy Mother's Day. C".

Last week, Kensington Palace appeared to address the conspiracy rumours swirling on social media regarding Kate. The mum-of-three, who was last seen in public in December, is currently recovering from unspecified abdominal surgery. A spokesperson from the Palace said: "Kensington Palace made it clear in January the timelines of the princess' recovery and we'd only be providing significant updates. That guidance stands." They also mentioned that Kate is doing "well".
