ITV viewers have already threatened to boycott the Oscars next year if it follows the same format.

Jonathan Ross hosted a live Oscars show on Sunday night for British viewers to get in on the action from the Academy Awards. He was joined by a panel of guests including actor Richard Armitage, comedian Ben Bailey Smith, actress Fay Ripley and TV presenter Yinka Bokinni. They were on hand to offer commentary before the award ceremony began and in between advert breaks.

However, the show didn't go down well with viewers as many slammed the "painful" coverage. Taking to X - formerly Twitter - many viewers were not afraid of speaking their mind. One said: "This Jonathan Ross ITV pre Academy Awards coverage is utterly painful. Awful jokes, forced laughs from his few guests, HELL ON EARTH #Oscars."

Another added: "The itv Jonathan Ross s***e feels like you’re stuck at the pub with randoms from work and you wanna go home #Oscars." Someone else commented: "Jonathan Ross: See you next year Me:," alongside a clip of Jennifer Lawrence in tears saying "what do you mean". A fourth quipped: "When I asked for ITV or the BBC to air the #Oscars, I meant just the ceremony, not f***ing Jonathan Ross playing bingo…"

A viewer added: "Being in the UK and watching the Oscars is so hard…i just wanna watch ppl winning awards but Jonathan Ross is gonna be waffling away for 4 hours…just shrrrupp man! #Oscars." Others had questioned why the show was needed as one said: "I want to watch the Oscars from Hollywood. Why am I watching Jonathan Ross and some other people in a studio in London?"

Another added: "I’d rather sit and watch adverts than this utterly embarrassing jonathan ross session." Some adverts played during the show, as a viewer wrote: "I am glad that ITV are putting adverts instead of Jonathan Ross and the guests. I think they saw people complaining about it and decided adverts were a better option."

During the show, Jonathan also infuriated viewers with his comments about the late Friends star Matthew Perry. The 'In Memoriam' section of the ceremony celebrated those who had died over the past year, including Matthew. During the following ad break, Jonathan told ITV viewers: "Welcome back. A touching tribute from the Academy there of some incredible performers and filmmakers sadly no longer with us. Always a sombre moment."

The presenter then added: "It was nice to see Matthew Perry included, even though he's not primarily known for his work in cinema, they probably could have done it without him." Viewers fumed at the remark as one said: "Jonathan ross’ comment on matthew perry was so f***ing unnecessary, what the f***." Another fumed: "Totally sick of ross and his chums now. Get this over with."
