Video shows the horrifying moment a helpless young boy is dragged through the snow by an aggressive dog.

The hound sunk its teeth into the youngster, believed to be only four years old, before hauling him away in the Irkutsk region of Russia. The terrified boy screamed and pleaded for help.

Only the action of bystanders, one threatening the vicious dog with a wooden board, saved the young victim, according to reports. The adults rescued the “shocked child” before he was seriously hurt.

The large animal released him from his clenched fangs and the boy ran to hide. He was later checked by doctors. The author of the video said: “The boy looked like he was four years old. As the villagers told me, everything was alright with him [in the end].

“He did not receive serious physical injuries.” The animal's teeth were mainly clenched into his clothing, said reports.

The incident was in Russia's Irkutsk region, known for a problem with rampant stray dogs, with repeated attacks on children. But reports say this dog in Shiryaeva village had an owner who let the beast run wild.

A criminal case has been launched by the Russian Investigative Committee into the owner for “causing serious harm to health due to carelessness”, which could lead to a prison term. Problems with uncontrolled dogs have worsened during the war against Ukraine.

Regions governments say they do not have funds to control the burgeoning stray and wild dog populations.
