Ange Postecoglou told Tottenham supporters dreaming of a return to the Champions League to "get excited" after they thrashed Aston Villa.

James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-min and Timo Werner all got on the scoresheet as Spurs put four past 10-man Villa to leave them just two points behind their top four rivals - with a game in hand.

Manchester United are six points off Tottenham and Postecoglou is confident that his side has the required quality and character to book a place in next season's Champions League.

"I think we made it tough for Aston Villa, they worked hard just to contain us," he told Sky Sports after the game. "Last 10 minutes of the second half you could already see them starting to tire a little bit.

"We just had to continue to do that and we got our rewards in the second half. We knew it was a big game obviously, everyone was talking it up as a game where it could lead to something significant.

"I never saw it like that, there's a good chunk of the season still to go. We just needed to stay calm, play our football. Get excited, why not? The supporters, if they don't get excited by a performance and result like that, in what was a significant game... you've got to enjoy that.

"We know every game is a challenge in the Premier League, especially a team like us who are trying to gain an identity. The next step for us is to maintain a consistency of quality performances."

Maddison insisted Spurs were not getting carried away despite acknowledging the importance of such an important win over one of their rivals.

"It feels as big as any other three points but we knew there would be a lot on today's game just because of the nature of the league table," he said. "[I'm] really happy, you see the celebrations because we work all week. We had a game plan and we came away with three points with a convincing win. It's a common theme in our game, we score a lot of goals late on.

"The message was to keep doing the same thing because they won't be able to keep up. We blew them away at the start of the second half. Game-by-game, sorry for the boring cliché answer. That's all you can do. You have to focus on winning the game."
