Barbie has raked in more than $1.4billion worldwide since its release last July, but could we be set for a follow-up sooner than expected?

Warner Bros. chief Pam Abdy admits she'd "love" to work on Barbie 2 with the famous flick's director Greta Gerwig, revealing the pair are "always talking" about a second movie. She admitted the fan-favourite film "ignited audiences around the world".

It's up for eight awards at tonight's Academy Awards, not forgetting the brutal snub for Greta and Margot Robbie. In an interview with the BBC, Abdy didn't want to call the Academy's decision "sexist" but did call Greta "one of the best filmmakers working today".

Greta has previously revealed she's open for Barbie 2, telling Variety: "If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don’t find an undertow, there’s no more. It’s something that I loved making so much. And I loved the world that we built so much and all of the actors and the idea of getting to be with that group of people again is very exciting."

It was only in August that she admitted hopes Barbie was the "launch of a world and a bunch of different Barbie movies", telling PEOPLE: "There’s a tone and a humour and a joy, and obviously the world is so beautiful. I want to go back to Barbie Land."

Insiders had also reported that the film's production crew had been invited to talk about another film, with a source saying: "The crew who worked on the Barbie film have been contacted to discuss working on the follow-up."

"It is very early days, but it's become apparent that bosses want the same crew for the sequel as they did for the first," the insider told The Sun. "Emails have been sent but firmer details have to be finalized."

It comes after Margot broke her silence over her Barbie snub ahead of tonight's Oscars. She didn't receive a nomination for best actress for her role in the Mattel Doll flick, while Ken actor Ryan Gosling did. Director Greta Gerwig was also snubbed in the best director category, despite the film's steaming Box Office success last year.

Now the 33-year-old has spoken out about the Academy's decision, admitting "there's no way to feel sad when you know you're this blessed". At a Sag-Aftra panel discussion, Margot explained: "Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director."

Margot added: "What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films. We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact, and it’s already done that and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would.

"That is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this." Despite the Oscars snub, Margot admitted she was "beyond ecstatic" at the film's mammoth success. Someone who wasn't quite as positive about the ordeal was 'I'm just Ken's' Ryan.

He said in a statement: "I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d being saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken.

"But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film. No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

"Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees. Having said that, I am so happy for America Ferrera and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film."
