Chris Jones has a new five year deal that will likely see the superstar kingpin of the Kansas City defence remain with the Chiefs and his relationship with head coach Andy Reid has prospered.

Following the Chiefs third Super Bowl in the last five seasons, Jones and his head coach embraced on the field and now both men are locked in with the franchise as they chase an historic third successive Vince Lombardi.

Jones is reported to have agreed terms on a new five-year deal with more than £90million in guaranteed money, and the second round pick from the 2016 NFL Draft looks almost certain to remain a Chief for life.

Reid is also believed to be in talks over a new long-term contract, alongside general manager Brett Veach, as the franchise look to lock up the cornerstones of their winning run.

It hasn't all been plain sailing though. Last summer, Jones did not agree to a contract, which led to a hold-out that saw him miss the early weeks of of the season, much to the disappointment of Reid at the time.

"There's been no communication, so I don't know what's going to go down. Whatever happens, happens, and if he's not there, the game goes on.

"They got to communicate and do their thing. There's just been no communication."

Jones and the Chiefs eventually agreed to a one-year deal and the 2023 season went really well, with Jones helping the team win the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers.

After the Super Bowl, Jones and Reid shared their moment as the confetti came down, and from there, reports indicated that it was only a matter of time until Jones signed a long-term contract to remain with the franchise drafted him. On Saturday, it appears negotiations cleared the final hurdles.

Jones is one of the most decorated active defensive players in the league. The 6-foot-6, 310-pounder has made five Pro Bowl rosters and won three Super Bowls.

In 2023, Jones recorded 10.5 sacks - the third time in his career he hit double-digits. He also tied a career-high with 29 quarterback hits.

Even when Jones and Reid were at odds before last season, other members of the organization made it clear that they wanted the former Mississippi State college football star to stick around for many more years.

"I know how much Chris loves the Chiefs," quarterback Patrick Mahomes said amid the acrimony last August. "He loves being a part of this organization. So I just try to stay out of it and tell Chris that I love him and that whenever he does come back, he'll be welcomed with open arms."

Now that Jones has his new contract all sorted, he can enjoy a more laid back offseason than 2023, with mandatory camp still many months away and his future settled.
