Visitors who fancy the soup at the King’s Highgrove country pile will need plenty of bread to pay for it.

A bowl of Brown Windsor at the cafe is £12 – up 60% from £7.50. And the cheapest salad costs a princely £17.95 this year, up from £10.50 previously. Around 35,000 people a year tour the gardens at Highgrove, near Tetbury, Glos, which are open from April to September.

They tuck into “seasonal culinary delights” prepared by estate chefs in the Orchard dining room, according to the website. But its £13.50 salmon quiches and £9.50 sarnies have been replaced by chicken breast on a bed of risotto for £25.95 and a veggie chilli for £22.

And visitors who paid £34.50 for tours could relax with a cream tea for an additional £35. But cream teas are now only available as part of a premium Champagne and Tea Garden Tour – priced at £98 per person.

A spokesman for Highgrove Gardens said: “We are proud to welcome thousands of visitors to Highgrove Gardens every year. This season, we are serving a varied and seasonal menu in our table service restaurant, which our Chefs regularly adapt to ensure guests are given the best experience possible.

"Our menu prices this year reflect investment in our staffing as well as the high quality and local ingredients used across the menu. We are proud that the sale of Highgrove products, garden tours, events and hospitality continue to support the work of The King’s Foundation and community initiatives such as our Winter Warmers series.”
