Fans of Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway were convinced The Chase star Anne Hegerty displayed disdain for Irish singers Jedward.

The 65-year-old general knowledge genius - better known to millions as The Chase’s top chaser The Governess - was involved in a sketch in the madcap ITV weekend gameshow alongside hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, both 48. In a bizarre scene, she was dressed as a hamburger and forced to duel against fellow The Chase star Shaun Wallace, 63 - who was dressed as a hotdog. Other ITV stars took part in similarly ridiculous sketches and then, at the end of the segment, all of them lined up on stage to dance merrily together.

However, Anne appeared to be less than impressed when former X Factor contestants John and Edward Grimes, 32, danced closely to her. Many viewers watching along spotted the awkward moment and took to social media to spark a conspiracy theory that Anne can barely stand the Irish twins.

One fan of the show took to X to write: “Anne Hegerty wasn’t impressed with Jedward. @antanddec @itvtakeaway #SaturdayNightTakeaway" - along with crying-with-laughter emojis. And another wrote: "This is exactly how most people probably look at #Jedward #SaturdayNightTakeaway @anne_hegerty @TheShaunWallace @antanddec" - along with a rolling on the floor laughing emoji.

But it seemed the twins irked some viewers watching from home. One unimpressed fan wrote: "It’s clear to me that #SaturdayNightTakeaway is going downhill when Jedward start appearing on the show…."

Earlier in the show, viewers were left in tears when a viewer was surprised with a free holiday gift - that he had been nominated for by his late wife. The show has a segment called the Happiest Minute of the Week where live audience members and those watching from home are rewarded for kind deeds with top prizes.

Cameras cut to a family home in Dunfermline, Scotland, where a man named Jordan Lark was told his late wife had nominated him for a prize. Dec explained: “Hi Jordan! You’re live on Saturday Night Takeaway. Now, Jordan, we know you recently lost your wife Sade very suddenly leaving you as mum and dad to your lovely kids Kai and Amber Rose.

“Now Saturday Night Takeaway was Sade’s favourite show and before she passed away, she nominated you to be part of it, so everyone could see what an amazing dad you are. Jordan, it’s a privilege to honour Sade’s wish and to give you and your family a Takeaway Getaway!”

As cameras returned to the studio, Dec battled back tears as he tried to proceed with the show. With his voice cracking, he said: “The happiest minute of the week is over. There you go everybody. See you soon!”

Those watching along at home were also floored by the emotional moment. One fan on X wrote: "Jesus Christ that happiest minute of the week needs a new name. I'm in bits." Another wrote: "Last happiest minute of the week nomination for me in floods of tears and decs voice cracking made it worse, what a nomination to make."
