Michael McIntyre has been forced to step away from public appearances as he was rushed to hospital.

Despite being back on TV screens as he hosts The Wheel on BBC, the comedian has revealed he underwent surgery. Earlier this week Michael was forced to cancel another comedy gig. Posting on X - formerly Twitter - his official account said: “We regret to inform customers that Michael McIntyre will be unable to perform on Monday 4 March at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton.

“Unfortunately, Michael has had an operation to remove kidney stones. The show will be rescheduled to a later date which will be announced shortly. Tickets will remain valid for the new date. If you are unable to make the new date you will be entitled to a refund. We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Michael had already been forced to cancel a show in Plymouth on Thursday 29 February. It was said illness had caused the comedian to pull out of the appearance at the last minute. A post declared: “Due to illness Michael is sadly unable to perform tonight's show (Thu 29 Feb) at Plymouth Pavilions. The show will be rescheduled to a later date to be announced soon. If you are unable to make the new date you will be entitled to a refund. We are sorry for any inconvenience.”

Another added: “Ouch! I had kidney stones a few years ago, more painful than giving birth twice... hoping Michael is on the mend.” Someone else commented: “Get well soon Michael! I know how painful that is as I’m just getting over kidney stones although didn’t have them operated on - nature took its course! Hope you get the strong pain relief!!”

According to the NHS, kidney stones are "quite common" with more than one in 10 people affected, and while some kidney stones can pass through your body completely unnoticed, larger ones can be "extremely painful". They are caused by waste products in the blood that can occasionally form crystals that collect inside the kidneys. Large kidney stones are usually removed through surgery, with the main symptoms including pain in the abdomen, high temperature, blood in urine and feeling sweaty. Michael is yet to share more details of his health struggle
