A mysterious bundle has washed up on a beach in the UK which could have come from the wreck of the Titanic.

The collection of dirty, rubber sheets could have been carried all the way from the watery resting place of the famous ship by currants that regularly bring items from that region ashore in the UK.

The ship was near Newfoundland, Canada, when it sank, about 400 miles off the coast. Most of the Titanic wreckage remains about 350 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. The mysterious bundle washed up on the shoreline of Keiss Beach, near John O’Groats, in Scotland and is thought to be something that the doomed vessel was carrying when it sank.

The wad of dirty rubber sheets, with each one having its own unique webbed pattern, is very similar to a bale discovered at Dunnet Beach in 2019.

The man who found the bizarre piece of flotsam, David Graham Scott, took pictures of it which aroused the curiosity of an expert at the other end of the country.

Cornish-based conservationist, Steve Trewhella, said these could have derived from the famous ship that sank in 1912. Steve said the sheets are 'gutta-percha' which are a dense form of latex similar to rubber.

It was widely used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for domestic and industrial purposes but these days it is now typically used for root canal treatment in dentistry.

He went on to state that it was quite possible that the gutta-percha bundle on Keiss Beach could even have come from the Titanic.

Mr Trewhella said: “It was hugely popular around a century ago and there is evidence from the existing logs that the Titanic was carrying gutta-percha when she sank in 1912. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that the bales could have come from that ship. We get a lot of debris floating over to the UK from the Newfoundland coast which passes over the wreck site.”

There have been very few incidents of items from the famous shipwreck washing ashore. In 2021 a message in a bottle, claiming to be written by 12-year-old Mathilde Lefebvre washed ashore.

Mathilde had been a third-class passenger on the ship, and the note was dated April 13, 1912. Shortly before midnight the next day, the ship struck an iceberg, causing it to sink in the early hours of the following morning.

Mathilde, three of her siblings and their mother, Marie, were never seen again, but 105 years later a note apparently signed by Mathilde was found on a Canadian beach.

It reads: “I am throwing this bottle into the sea in the middle of the Atlantic. We are due to arrive in New York in a few days. If anyone finds her, tell the Lefebvre family in Liévin.”

Scientists examined the bottle and paper for signs of a hoax but found both to be from the time period stated in the letter.

“Old paper is easy to find – by ripping a blank page from an old book, for instance – while old bottles and even corks are not rare,” said Dr Nicolas Beaudry of the Université du Québec à Rimouski.
