Prue Leith caused gasps and nervous laughter on The One Show when she swore live on air.

The 84-year-old Great British Bake Off judge was a guest on the popular easy watching evening TV show that airs week nights on the BBC. Alex Jones, 46, and 31-year-old Roman Kemp were presiding over Friday’s edition of the show - which featured Prue along with 33-year-old singer and actor Olly Alexander. And while Prue is known for being a comforting judge on Bake Off, BBC viewers were stunned when she swore live on air.

Prue was a guest on the show to promote her brand new cooking show, Prue Leith's Cotswold Kitchen - which will run for 10 episodes and airs via ITV1. While discussing the new series, Prue explained that her husband, retired designer John Playfair, 78, also appears in the show as filming takes place in their house.

The fact he is included in the series inspired Alex who wondered what it was like for the Bake Off star to work with her other half. But as Prue began explaining, she turned the air blue as she swore in front of the live cameras - earning her a stern telling off from the show host.

Alex began her questioning, saying: “One of the things that is new on this programme, is a brand new celebrity, it’s your husband, John.” And this prompted Prue to reply: “I know, I’m very frankly p****d off about it.”

The studio laughed nervously, while Alex urgently said: “Well, Prue Leith, you can’t say that on The One Show, it’s a family show.” Prue herself immediately started to apologise, saying: “ I am sorry, I am very unhappy about it because he has turned out to be an absolute star.”

Viewers were shocked by the exchange, with many taking to X to comment on the moment. One fan wrote: “Prue leith swearing live on the one show at 7:30pm has sent me west.” And another wrote: “@BBCTheOneShow love @PrueLeith only dropping the p word live, made me chuckle.”

John is Prue’s second husband - as she was previously married to property developer and author Rayne Kruger from 1974 until his death in December 2002 at the age of 80. Last month, Prue said she was mildly concerned John could overshadow her on her new show.

She confessed to Yahoo!: "I think he's a natural on television because he doesn't take direction. The director can't tell him to do anything. He just does what he feels like. We made a programme together before about gardening, Prue's Great Garden Plot. John was in that and he had never done telly before but he was just terrific.

"So I'm a little bit nervous. I think I'm the telly star in this family. I'm not really sure how I feel about being usurped by my toyboy husband... I'm nervous what they'll really love about the show is John and I want them to love us both!"
