A passenger plane has skidded off the runway at a major international airport, leaving the jet hanging half on and half off the tarmac.

The United Airlines plane was pictured at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston having appeared to have come off the runway. It was reported by local news that the plane had been landing at the time.

After coming off the tarmac and coming to rest on the grass, the plane was pictured tilted to the side, seemingly resting on one of its wings.

Passengers on board the flight were evacuated, according to an airport spokesperson. They said everyone was evacuated safely and no injuries were reported. ABC13 reported that there were 160 passengers and 6 crew members aboard.

The FAA, in a statement provided to ABC13, said that the plane — United Airlines Flight 2477 from Memphis — had just landed when it rolled into the grass before it had the chance to taxi to the gate at approximately 8am local time.

The statement from the FAA reads: "After landing at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, United Airlines Flight 2477 rolled onto the grass when exiting onto the taxiway around 8 a.m. local time on Friday, March 8."

It continued: "The passengers deplaned on the taxiway and were bused to the terminal. The Boeing 737 departed from Memphis International Airport. Please contact the airline for additional information. The FAA will investigate."

Click2Houston obtained a statement from United Airlines about the incident as well. It confirmed much of what the FAA revealed in its own statement.

The United Airlines statement reads: "Around 8 a.m. today, a United Airlines flight landed on a runway at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). As it was exiting the runway for the gate, the aircraft left the pavement and entered the grass along Runway 9-27. Fortunately, no one on board was injured and all passengers were safely transported to the terminal."

United Airlines added that the FAA was notified and that no flights were delayed because of the incident. More details would be released soon, the airline promised, stating that anyone concerned can reach out with any questions.

One horrifying picture shows a wheel falling off the plane, though it remains unclear if that was what caused the mishap during the landing. Passengers say the landing itself was smooth but that the ride after while the plane was taxiing was bumpy, according to Click2Houston.

It was reported that all of the passengers' belongings were still on the flight over an hour after it landed, and it remains unclear when the luggage will be offloaded. Some passengers feared they would miss their connecting flights because of the ordeal.
