Zoe Ball set to return to work sooner rather than later following mum's cancer diagnosis

BBC Radio 2 listeners were left understandably concerned after Zoe Ball announced that she will be taking time off the airwaves to be a pillar of support for her mum.

But now, the 53-year-old's breakfast show stand-in Gaby Roslin has confirmed that Zoe will be back on air sooner rather than later but will have to take sporadic days off in order to care for her 74 year old mum, Julia. Reassuring fans, Gaby said: "Zoe will be in, but she's just going to take a few days off here and there. Because she wants to be with her beautiful mummy Julia."

Fans are no stranger to Gaby as she regularly hosts the show during school holidays. She added: "I'm here, I've got your back Zoe, always have. Love to Julia as well and to the whole family. Zoe says her mum is being incredibly brave, and she’s in awe of the doctors the nurses and the support teams. Love you Zoe." Sharing the news with her fans, Zoe, who was married to DJ Fatboy Slim and shares a son Woody with the star, recently took to social media to pen the heartbreaking post.

She wrote: "Heartbreakingly our beautiful Mama Julia has been diagnosed with cancer. As many of you know from experience, these are extremely tough times. Mum is being incredibly brave. My brother Jamie & I are completely in awe of the brilliant doctors, nurses & support teams looking after Mum. Thank you. Gratitude to our families & our extended family & friends at home & at work for their support at this time."

She added: "Sending out love to people reading this who are battling cancer, or awaiting diagnosis & also to the folk looking after their dear ones who are poorly. I'm trying to be at work on breakfast as often as I can but occasionally need to be home with my Mama. Thanks to Gaby for stepping in. Lots of love."

The presenter, who has been a staple on TV and radio since the nineties, posted two pictures to accompany the devastating news. One was of Julia seemingly receiving treatment as she sported a t-shirt that read: "This morning is amazing and so are you." And the other picture showed Zoe's mum with some of the family.

The post generated a host of well wishes from celebrity friends including Strictly star Dianne Buswell who wrote: "Sending all my love." Meanwhile former contestant John Whaite commented: "Much love to you all."#TV presenter Angellica Bell penned: "Sending love to your mum, you and your family. Stay positive." Whilst Zoe's stand-in Gaby added: "Love you Zoe and such huge love to your beautiful mummy."

TV host Sarah Cawood responded: "Oh Zoe my darling, this is awful news and I'm so sorry. Sending your mama so much love and strength to take on the challenges she now faces, and to you too, in supporting her. Massive massive cuddles to you all."
