Roberto De Zerbi has been linked as a potential successor for the Liverpool job once Jurgen Klopp leaves and Trent Alexander-Arnold's latest comments will only add fuel to the fire.

Klopp confirmed he'd be walking away from his post as Reds boss at the end of the season after nine glorious years at the club. In turn, those at the top of the Liverpool hierarchy have responded by drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements and it is believed that De Zerbi is admired by those running things at Anfield.

The Italian has been lauded for his work with Brighton since arriving at the Amex in late 2022 and this isn't the first time De Zerbi has been linked with a 'big six' role. Though ex-Liverpool star Xabi Alonso is still the front-runner to succeed Klopp, the Seagulls manager has been the subject of praise from Reds right-back Alexander-Arnold.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, the Liverpool vice-captain discussed how Brighton are the team that has impressed him the most so far in recent seasons. Alexander-Arnold explained: "I think probably the most interesting team over the last year or two in the Premier League has been Brighton.

"So, I would say Brighton are the one when I’m able to watch one of their games it’s always entertaining. It’s always free flowing football. The way that they build-up and play out from the back is exceptional, really brave.

"And I think yeah I would say Brighton’s been the one. The Liverpool defender also admitted it’s very difficult to play against De Zerbi’s side. It’s an absolute nightmare to play against [Brighton]. It’s a very, very difficult game."

Liverpool's pursuit of first-choice target Alonso could prove more difficult than first expected. Bayern Munich will also need a new manager after this season concludes as Thomas Tuchel departs having failed to meet the objectives and are confident they can tempt the Spaniard into opting for the Allianz over Anfield.

Such a glowing assessment is likely to ring in the minds of Liverpool's decision makers, especially as it came from such a vital first-team player in Alexander-Arnold. However, De Zerbi has issued an update of his own regarding his future.

Pressed for comment on the rumours linking him with a return to Italy, he added: "It’s not true that I don’t think about it, but usually I do what I like. I do what makes me happy and right now it is to be where I am.

"I’m lucky now to be able to compete with these teams at this level to play these games. It makes me happy when we win but also when we lose, I feel something special."
