Baywatch star Pamela Anderson has swapped a buxom, blonde bombshell for a more natural appearance in a bid to “challenge beauty”.

The TV star and former Playboy bunny, 56, says she wants to “flip the script” on the beauty industry - as she feels that getting fully made up every day means “you lose yourself”. She also laughs that she now spends far less time in the makeup chair since deciding against having a heavily pained face, which is an added bonus.

“You have to have a sense of humour about yourself,” she says. “I hardly have to get ready. It’s like you spend half your life in a makeup chair in this industry. I have a lot of great friends who are makeup and hair and stylists and those are all important people in these dreams that we’re all creating for magazines and movies, but for every day, you lose yourself.

“So, it’s nice to challenge yourself and not fall into all that madness. I create my own kind of madness.” Pamela appeared at autumn’s Paris Fashion Week shows without makeup last year, which she insisted at the time was not an act of “rebellion”.

“When I was at Paris Fashion Week, people asked me about that a lot,” she tells CR Fashion. “And I think, well, I was doing it for me. Can I walk out the door like this? Like, I’m fine the way I am. And I just didn’t want to get into the whole glam thing and play the game. I just want to flip the script; I want to challenge beauty.”

Pamela’s team of agents and publicists - as well as her children Brandon, 27, and Dylan, 26 - were initially hesitant about her decision, she says, explaining: “My agents and even my kids were like, ‘Mom, you can’t, you need the glam team!’ And I said, ‘No, what are you talking about? The fact that you guys are saying that to me makes me not want to do it more! I’m going to do a fresh face, no makeup, not pretend no-makeup.’ And I just felt free. No one looked at me and went, ‘Aggghhhh!’”

She believes the statement is an important one in an age where young girls filter their images online. She added: “I just think, the social media world and the fantasy, especially in fashion and film, those places are escapism, but this everyday stuff … I felt like It’s okay to just be. And more interesting.

“I found that it resonated even though it wasn’t my real intention to make a big statement. And I’m glad that it had a positive message. It’s not world peace or anything, but it was a little moment.”

Last year, Pamela told her story in her own words for the first time in a Netflix documentary series, as she wanted to set the record straight following a drama based on her relationship with Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, Pam and Tommy. The former couple, who share Pammy’s two sons together, split after a sex tape of them was stolen and leaked at the height of her fame in the 1990s while she was appearing on Baywatch. She turned to philanthropy, and campaigning against animal cruelty amongst other things, using her fame as a platform to raise awareness.

“People would want to meet me for whatever reason, maybe they wanted a kiss on the cheek, or a picture taken,” she says. “And I would want laws to be changed for animal rights or human rights or vulnerable people and women and children. And we’d all get what we wanted that way.”

Now, Pamela lives in her home country Vancouver, Canada, in a property her grandparents owned, and believes she has returned to a natural and spiritual place. “My grandfather convinced me that there are gnome villages and elves and fairies and tree spirits, and I was really wrapped up into my imagination,” she tells the mag. “So I’ve always had this fantastical mind and he encouraged that in me.

“I remember the “nature bible” that we always referred to, and DIY creams and things like that have always been around. So it’s not new. But it’s fun, because it’s kind of in fashion where before, like thirty years ago when I was trying to make sustainable products or talk about simplification of skincare, people looked at me like I was crazy.”

She lived at the home with her fifth ex-husband Dan Hayhurst, though the pair announced their divorce in January 2022 - she previously married Tommy, musician Kid Rock, poker player Rick Salomon and Jon Peters, though their union lasted just 12 days.
