Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton 'in contact' and will maintain 'superficial' relations

Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are reported to be 'in contact' but talks have remained formal, with the Princess of Wales "reluctant to forgive and forget", an expert claims.

The relationship between Meghan and Kate has been strained in recent years, with fallouts including moments whilst Meghan was still an active working royal before she left in 2020 and moved to the US alongside her husband Prince Harry. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, royal expert and author Tom Quinn said: "She has already made contact with Kate as she has with her father-in-law to wish them both a speedy recovery but this is still at the formal stage and it is likely to stay there - it doesn't have real warmth because of all that has happened in the past."

He added: "Kate is fine with all the good wishes but reluctant to forgive and forget - she just doesn't trust Meghan not to go public if there is a misunderstanding or the slightest disagreement. Some kind of relationship will develop - from Meghan's point of view primarily for the sake of brand Sussex - but it will always be superficial. Kate and Meghan can't go back to trusting each other."

The comment comes as Meghan and sister-in-law Kate appear to have been starting to speak, as Meghan reportedly took a phone call from Princess Kate to "clear the air" after Omid Scobie's bombshell royal book reignited a race row in the Royal Family. It was more three years ago that a royal race row was first sparked after claims by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle during their bombshell chat with Oprah Winfrey.

The Sussexes have previously endured a tense and strained relationship with the Royal Family, particularly in the wake of Meghan and Harry stepping down as working royals in 2020. However with recent news this year emerging that King Charles has been diagnosed with cancer it appears the royal rift could be thawing, with both Harry and Meghan keen to repair the relationship with the royal family.

Harry and Meghan are said to be 'concerned' for Kate, following her abdominal surgery earlier this year and her step down from royal duties. The Princess of Wales spent nearly two weeks at The London Clinic in Marylebone after undergoing “planned abdominal surgery” and was discharged in January. Ever since Kate hasn't taken part in any official royal engagements, with her last appearance on Christmas Day when she was seen walking to and from church at Sandringham with other royals. The first sighting of her came on Monday (4 March) for the first time since her procedure, as she was photographed out driving near her Windsor home with her mum, Carole Middleton
