Joleon Lescott has criticised Trent Alexander-Arnold after the Liverpool ace left Rio Ferdinand speechless following his subtle dig at Manchester City ahead of this weekend's crunch clash.

Alexander-Arnold added fuel to the fire ahead of Sunday's game at Anfield as he suggested that trophies mean more to Liverpool than City, detailing the finances available to Pep Guardiola compared to Jurgen Klopp. The Reds sit one point above City at the top of the Premier League, while third-place Arsenal are two points behind the leaders and still firmly in the title race.

"It's tough," Alexander-Arnold told FourFourTwo earlier this week. "We're up against a machine that's built to win - that's the simplest way to describe City and their organisation.

"Looking back on this era, although they've won more titles than us and have probably been more successful, our trophies will mean more to us and our fanbase because of the situations at both clubs, financially. How both clubs have built their teams and the manner in which we've done it, probably means more to our fans."

When asked for his opinion on Alexander-Arnold's comments, Ferdinand, who cut a bewildered and stunned figure, told TNT Sports: "Wow. Shots fired. He's lucky it's at Anfield."

Joleon Lescott later weighed in with his verdict as he slammed the right-back. "In regards to the comments, you would have to hear it or see the context in which it was said, because it's easy to read that and think the worst," the former City defender said.

"The thing I would question is the fans. I don't think you can say any game, any trophy means more to your fans than another set of fans because it's equally as important to anyone."

Since Guardiola took charge of City in the summer of 2016, they have won 14 major trophies, compared to Liverpool's four in the same period. That includes City winning five Premier League titles in six years.

City progressed into the quarter-final of the Champions League following a 6-2 aggregate victory over Copenhagen. Following Wednesday's 3-1 second-leg victory, Guardiola said: "We're into the next round. Still, we are there in this competition. It was difficult to attack them because they are well organised playing four or five at the back.

"We are well respected for our openness. Before I arrived we didn't believe we could do it. It's a question of time, a process. They [hierarchy] gave me time, gave us time. We are a team that believes we can do it. Listen, we're competing with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. We don't know who we are going to face. It's a question of wait and see. The important thing is seven years in a row we are here."
