Forest Gate Police Station fire rages for 7 hours as huge blaze seen for miles

More than 100 people were evacuated from buildings following a huge fire at a police station last night.

Emergency services confirmed the casualties today as authorities continue to investigate the blaze at Forest Gate Police Station in east London, said to have started at around 4pm. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but is under investigation.

More than 170 firefighters tackled it throughout the evening and, this morning, a source said on X scores of people were evacuated from the police station and neighbouring properties. A London Fire Brigade spokesperson confirmed they were first called to the scene at 4.17pm and had the blaze fully under control by 11.08pm.

Last night, road closures had been put in place due to the blaze and buses 5, 86, 330, and 425 were diverted. It is unclear if the roads have reopened and the buses can today resume their regular routes.

Flames were seen pouring from the roof of the building, which was evacuated by police and those residents nearby, who weren't evacuated, were told to keep their windows closed.

"[The] police station had suddenly caught fire at around 4pm, with the blaze going on for around 40 minutes before the fire brigade began putting out the flames. Whole situation is surreal hope everyone is okay," a witness said.

Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, wrote on X: "London Fire Brigade are currently dealing with a fire at Forest Gate Police Station. I am in close contact with the Fire Commissioner.Avoid the area and keep windows/doors closed. Road closures are in place at the scene."

The Metropolitan Police told The Mirror: "London Fire Brigade are currently dealing with a fire at Forest Gate Police Station on the third floor of the building. The building has been evacuated. We are not aware of any injuries or people trapped in the building. Road closures are in place at the scene." The investigation into the fire in east London continues.
