City restaurant fined £7,600 after fly-tipping leads to horror rat-infestation

A restaurant in Redbridge was slapped with a hefty fine of over £7,600 for fly-tipping that led to a rat infestation.

Million's Lounge and Restaurant, located in Chadwell Heath, had already been on the radar of Redbridge Council due to its poor waste management, with locals often complaining about it. During a council inspection, the restaurant's bins were found on land owned by other businesses.

Inspectors also discovered several black bin bags and other rubbish scattered around, including used shisha smoking materials, kitchen, bar, and party waste. They even found bags of rotting raw food like chicken, lots of food and bar order tickets, and metal ventilation ducting.

This mess attracted rats and mice. The Company Director, 32 year old Mohsin Rashid, and Millions Group of Companies Ltd were called to Barkingside Magistrates Court on Tuesday, February 13.

They faced charges for four instances of fly-tipping and two counts of not following an Environmental Protection Act waste management notice, reports MyLondon. He was ordered to pay costs totalling £7,675.

Cllr Khayer Chowdhury, Redbridge Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety, said: "We all have a responsibility to keep our borough clean and tidy, and this includes businesses. The failure to correctly store commercial waste presents a threat to the environment and public health, as well as being an eyesore for local communities."

Redbridge Council has issued a stern warning to businesses who fly-tip their rubbish, after successfully prosecuting one such offender. Councillor John Howard said: "The majority of our local businesses act responsibly and store their commercial waste properly.

"But for those who aren't doing this or think they can get away with fly-tipping their rubbish, this prosecution should serve as a strong warning that Redbridge Council will continue taking tough action against those businesses who refuse to act responsibly and legally when disposing of their waste."
