The film is an adaptation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1792 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. According to it's IMDb page, the film is about "two vicious step-siblings of an elite Manhattan prep school [who] make a wager ... to deflower the new headmaster's daughter before the start of term."

With a budget of $10.5 million (about £8.2 million), the film brought in $75.9 million (about £60 million) from the box office. It spawned a prequel film in 2001 and a sequel in 2004.

In 2015, a jukebox musical of the film premiered Off-Broadway in New York and in Los Angeles. It included various 90s hits like Genie in a Bottle, originally by Christina Aguilera, and I'll Make Love To You, originally by Boys II Men.

That same year, NBC picked up a pilot for a sequel series of the film. The show was set to be about Bash Casey, the son of Sebastian (played by Ryan) and Annette (played by Reese).

Kathryn was also set to be in the show, but production was canceled several months later. Then in April 2023 a reboot series was announced and ordered by Amazon Freevee. It's unclear if the original cast members would make a reappearance in this new series.

Two of the cast members, Ryan and Reese were engaged at the time of filming and the two later married that year. They share two children, Ava Elizabeth, 24, and Deacon Reese, 20.
