A mum accused of murdering her 10-year-old daughter has been seen in court for the first time.

Jaskirat Kaur spoke only to confirm her name and date of birth when she appeared at Wolverhampton Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. The 33-year-old - also known as Jasmine Kang - is charged with the murder of her daughter Shay Kang. The schoolgirl's body was discovered at a house in the West Midlands town of Rowley Regis on Monday.

Kaur, who wore a grey T-shirt and jogging bottoms in court, was not required to indicate any plea to the murder charge. She was remanded in custody.

She will next appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Thursday. A police cordon remains in place at the end-of-terrace house where Shay's body was found, and a post-mortem examination is set to be carried out to establish the cause of death.

Detective Inspector Dan Jarratt, who is leading the investigation, previously said: "Our thoughts remain with Shay's family and friends. Her tragic death has had a profound impact on those who knew her as well as the wider community. We ask that they are left to grieve in private as our inquiries continue."

Tributes have flooded in for young Shay from friends and family following her death, with local people seen laying flowers near a house in Rowley Regis. Brickhouse Primary School, where she was a pupil, said: "Shay was a bright, happy, fun-loving child who was well liked by all and she will be very sadly missed by everyone. School is the heart of the community and we have already begun working with our children and staff to support them following this devastating news."

Shay’s godmother Kayleigh Colclough, who who previously lived with her and Kaur in Smethwick, also posted a series of heartbreaking messages on Facebook. She wrote: “I’ll miss you baby girl. My heart hurts.", adding in a separate post : “I took them in and they lived with me for 5 years. I wouldn't say I'm much of a godmother now I let you down but I PROMISE YOU I WILL GET YOU JUSTICE. I promise you I will get justice for Shay. I’m grieving for a child that wasn't even mine."

Speaking after the mother's arrest this week, a West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We're in the early stages of our investigation and a cordon has been put in place while our enquiries continue."
