Zoe Ball has announced that she will be taking time away from her BBC Radio 2 show following a cancer diagnosis in her family.

The radio host, 53, shared the news with fans on Wednesday afternoon. Zoe announced on Instagram that her "brave" mother Julia Peckham, 74, has been diagnosed with cancer and that she may need some time off work as a result.

It comes following her absence from BBC Radio station's breakfast show in recent days, with fellow presenter Gaby Roslin, 59, having stepped in as cover. Zoe expressed gratitude towards Gaby in her post announcing the news.

She wrote in a post: "Heartbreakingly our beautiful Mama Julia has been diagnosed with cancer. As many of you know from experience, these are extremely tough times. Mum is being incredibly brave. My brother Jamie & I are completely in awe of the brilliant doctors, nurses & support teams looking after Mum. Thank you. Gratitude to our families & our extended family & friends at home & at work for their support at this time."

I'm trying to be at work on breakfast as often as I can but occasionally need to be home with my Mama. Thanks to Gaby for stepping in. Lots of love."
