Donald Trump might have dominated Super Tuesday but the disgraced former president sounded far from celebratory during a bleak victory speech, warning America is "dying" as "the world is laughing".

After sweeping up almost every state primary vote, the Republican frontrunner painted a dismal picture of what he thought the nation's future would be under President Joe Biden's potential re-election during a victory party at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

“Our cities are choking to death. Our states are dying. And frankly, our country is dying, and we’re going to make America great again – greater than ever before,” he said during the speech, which was far more subdued than his usual grandiose performances.

Highlighting what he viewed as the nation's hardships over the past three years, Trump expressed concerns about the direction under Biden's leadership, citing issues such as border security and China policy, and wept over the perceived decline in America's global standing. He claimed the rest of the world has been mocking the US because of what he called "Biden migrant crime"

“It’s a new category of crime and it’s violent, where they’ll stand in the middle of a street and have fistfights with police officers,” he said. Adding: “If they did that in their countries from where they came, they’d be killed instantly – instantly. They wouldn’t do that. So the world is laughing at us.”

At one point, he even complained about "brand-new beautiful equipment left behind" after the withdrawal from Afghanistan. He said: "Jets and tanks and everything you can think of. Goggles. Night goggles. They didn’t used to fight at night. Now they do, because they have goggles. They have better goggles than we have."

Despite securing victories in the Republican primaries, Trump voiced scepticism about the integrity of the electoral process, dubbing the US as akin to a "third-world country" both at its borders and in its elections. "We’re a third-world country at our borders, and we’re a third-world country at our elections," he said.

Asserting that his administration could have prevented foreign policy crises in Ukraine and Gaza, Trump doubled down on his characterization of migrants at the southern border as invaders, despite contrary statements from border authorities. While acknowledging his successes on Super Tuesday and expressing gratitude to his family and campaign team, notable absences from the event included Melania Trump.

Nonetheless, Trump asserted the party would unite behind his candidacy, brushing off challenges from Republican contenders like Nikki Haley, who secured a victory in Vermont before reportedly dropping out of the race. He said his success was "ultimately going to unify this country and unify this party."

Trump is now the same age Biden was during the 2020 campaign. He repeatedly attacks Biden’s intelligence and mental acuity but has been sensitive to questions of his own sharpness after he mixed up Haley with Nancy Pelosi and Biden with former President Barack Obama at past rallies.

Trump defeated more than a dozen major Republican challengers and was left facing only Haley, his former UN ambassador. Haley had maintained strong fundraising and notched her first primary victory over the weekend in Washington, DC, a Democrat-run city with few registered Republicans.

At the time, Trump mocked that Haley had been "crowned queen of the swamp." At a rally Monday in Houston, Haley said: "We can do better than two 80-year-old candidates for president." However, she reportedly dropped out of the race on Wednesday.
