Spring is here - time to get to work on your garden.

If you've got a grass lawn, you'll want it to be in top shape for the spring and summer months when you get the most use out of it. But in the winter, patches that were once a luscious shade of green can turn yellow and look unsightly by the time March rolls around. These patches can be a nuisance to get rid of, but worry not, as grass-growing experts have shared the perfect formula to ensure your lawn stays in good condition for the rest of the year.

Pennington Seed, a grass-growing supplement, shared a post on their website in which they explained that regular watering isn't the only thing your lawn needs. If you find yourself with yellow spots, then you likely need to add nutrients to your grass to help it flourish.

The experts said: "If you're watering your grass properly, but it's pale green or yellow instead of dark green, your turf is most likely nutrient deficient. Yellow lawns generally lack key nutrients such as iron and nitrogen."

Pennington Seed recommends using their own Ironite Mineral Supplement 1-0-1 product on your lawn, which has a formula to keep grass healthy that involves using 20 perfect iron, 50 perfect slow-release nitrogen, Advanced Soil Technology and beneficial microbes. It can be bought for around £17 from eBay, while other similar iron-based lawn tonics can cost as little as £10 from Amazon.

However, Pennington claims the slow-release nitrogen in their formula is "ideal", stating: "It leads to even grass growth, won't burn the lawn and surrounding plants, and is longer lasting, which means less frequent fertilising."

Also included in the formula is something called "advanced soil technology" which is said to be able to improve the conditions of the soil so it's the right environment for grass to grow, while the microbes increase organic activity in the soil, which helps plants more efficiently.

Meanwhile, another garden expert previously claimed that lawn sand can stop your grass from turning yellow. In a video shared on YouTube in the autumn of last year, the expert said you can often get yellow grass in the winter because there is less sunlight and the grass can't store as much energy. He also said the grass could be suffering from a lack of iron or be struggling in the cold winds - but placing down lawn sand should be able to help with all of these issues.

Lawn sand is a treatment made up of three ingredients: ferrous sulphate, which is sulphate with iron, ammonia sulphate, and sand. The main active ingredient is ferrous sulphate which is supposed to provide some colour to your lawn, as well as keep moss at bay - but the expert said you should be careful not to get it on anything that isn't your lawn, as it will stain.

You can buy lawn sand from any garden centre or even Amazon. A 10kg bag of lawn sand from Amazon is supposed to be enough to treat 140 square metres of grass, and costs around £15.
