The latest project from Guy Ritchie is almost here, as The Gentlemen heads to Netflix. Streaming later this month, the crime-comedy series is based on Ritchie’s Matthew McConaughey-led gangster film of the same name.
The 2020 crime caper was another hit for the British auteur, grossing more than $155 million worldwide against a $22 million budget, while Netflix officially greenlit the spin-off series in 2022. While set in the same world as its feature-length predecessor, the new iteration will centre on a host of new characters and follow a brand-new, original storyline set in Ritchie’s unique vision of England’s criminal underbelly.
Ritchie returns to direct the opening two episodes of the series while serving as executive producer and co-writer alongside Peaky Blinders’ Matthew Read. Speaking to Netflix in November, Ritchie said: “The world of The Gentlemen is a little bit of me.

The Gentlemen will centre on Eddie Horniman – the estranged son of an English aristocrat – as he inherits his father’s sizeable estate only to discover it’s part of a cannabis empire. Moreover, a host of unsavoury characters from Britain’s criminal underworld want a piece of the operation.
Determined to extricate his family from their clutches, Eddie tries to play the gangsters at their own game. However, as he gets sucked into the world of criminality, he begins to find a taste for it.

How to watch The Gentlemen in the UK

Who is in the cast of The Gentlemen?
The Gentleman boasts a stacked ensemble cast led by The White Lotus star Theo James as Eddie Horniman, the Duke of Halstead, who gets drawn into a world of criminality following his father’s death. He stars alongside The Departed’s Ray Winstone as career criminal Bobby Glass and Skins’ Kaya Scodelario as Susie Glass, Bobby’s ruthless daughter.

What are the critics saying about The Gentlemen?
Early reviews have come flooding in ahead of the show’s launch, with particular praise given to James’ performance. Variety said the actor “charms” in this “exemplary” thriller that entertains with “hijinks, plots and gory violence” while adhering to Ritchie’s signature style.
“From the picturesque settings and costuming to the use of written on-screen text that helps the audience keep varied deals, people and schemes outlined, the show unfolds like a dazzling web of turmoil, keeping viewers sucked in over its eight episodes,” it said.
Radio Times gave The Gentlemen four stars, praising Ritchie for creating a world that “feels expansive, vibrant and filled with real characters.”
“Guy Ritchie goes full Guy Ritchie” it added, and fans will “love it.”
Vinnie Jones worked with Ritchie on Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and SnatchCollider awarded The Gentlemen an impressive 9/10 rating, hailing it as even better than the film. It said: “The Gentlemen is the perfect example of improving an already perfectly good movie by expanding on it to tell a new, and even better, story.
“The Netflix series has all the things that fans of Ritchie could want but also feels accessible to those who aren’t quite familiar with the auteur. It’s bloody, foul-mouthed, fast-paced, and it doesn’t disappoint.”
