Draining struggling public services of cash to fund an election bribe is yet another Tory con trick.

If Jeremy Hunt counts on his expected 2p cut in National Insurance to dig his cronies out of the mire he’s sadly mistaken.

Expect deep cuts to pay for this, which will spark an exodus of fed-up nurses, teachers and other overstretched frontline workers.

We doubt voters will be fooled by the return of a relatively small amount of the huge extra sums in tax the Tory Treasury will grab.

The Resolution Foundation says those on under £27,000 will still lose out from frozen Income Tax and National Insurance thresholds, with those on £16,000 losing almost £500.

They won’t be tricked by Hunt’s snake oil.

Best of British

The gift of life is the most precious present of all and we applaud the live donor who gave part of their liver to save baby Florence-Ivy Langton.

Without the selfless kindness of a stranger, there would have been no transplant in Leeds Children’s Hospital so the inspiring anonymous donor deserves enormous thanks.

The Daily Mirror campaigned long and hard to change the law on organ donations to presumed consent in a major drive to boost donations but that doesn’t change the fact that this person is truly heroic.

Once again we find people are fundamentally decent, constantly thinking of others rather than only themselves. This donor is the best of British. Thank you.

Land of nod

With Rishi Sunak popping upstairs in No10 to plump the pillows, smooth the sheets and straighten the duvet, is Britain finally learning he’s good at something?

In Broken Britain this Prime Minister’s made his bed and unfortunately we have to lie in it.
