Kane keeps Bayern Munich Champions League dream alive to take heat off Tuchel
Harry Kane netted twice and became the first Englishman to score 50 European goals to keep alive Bayern Munich ’s hopes of silverware this season.
And the £100m England captain has now scored a staggering 33 goals in 33 games in his first season for the Bavarian giants. The England captain left Spurs to win trophies but the Bundesliga champions for the last 11 seasons trail Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen by 10 points.
The 1-0 first leg defeat in Rome - in the middle of three consecutive losses last month - caused Thomas Tuchel to be told he will be sacked at the end of the season. But Tuchel won the battle of two ex-Chelsea coaches against Maurizio Sarri last night thanks to Kane’s double and a Thomas Muller header.
The 2020 winners are now back in the quarter-finals as they bid to avoid their first trophyless season since 2011-12. Kane, who has never won a major trophy, only had seven touches in the opening tense 30 minutes - the fewest of any outfield player.
And Lazio’s Ciro Immobile, who scored the penalty in the first leg, eluded Eric Dier but missed a clear header at the far post after 37 minutes. Less than two minutes later, Muller headed back to Raphael Guerreiro and the Portuguese’s scuffed shot was headed home by Kane through Lazio keeper Ivan Provedel.
Marcel Sabitzer completes Man Utd transfer after last-minute deadline day dashIt was his first Champions League knockout goal for exactly five years after he scored for Tottenham at Dortmund on the way to the 2019 final - and his 50th in all European competitions.
In first-half injury time, Guerreiro’s cleared corner was volleyed back by Matthijs De Ligt and Muller headed home from three yards out.
It was the German veteran’s 60th Champions League goal, including 11 in last 16 ties since 2009. After 66 minutes, Kane tapped home the rebound after Leroy Sane’s shot was parried by Provedal for his 51st European goal and 27th in the Champions League. Wayne Rooney (30) is the only Englishman to have scored more in the top European competition.
