The UK Government have set their sights on hosting the Ryder Cup, with a group of golf courses keen on staging the historic biennial event.

The Ryder Cup has not featured on UK soil since Gleneagles staged the Europeans' clash with their American rivals

, where the hosts prevailed comfortably. Since then Team Europe have been hosted in France and Italy, and will then head to Adare Manor in Ireland in 2027.

There are hopes now however that the famous matchplay clash will return to the United Kingdom in either 2031 and 2035, with the current UK Government keen to launch a bid.

The plan comes as part of UK Sport's hopes of staging more high-profile sporting events around the country. Simon Morton, the deputy chief executive of UK Sport said: "Live sport is a fundamental part of this country’s social fabric.

"No other country buys more tickets per head to major sporting events than we do in the UK. In the years ahead, we want to host a programme of live sport that resonates with the British public and makes a difference to millions of people’s lives."

The news comes after Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf & Spa were given a boost in their hopes to stage the event last month.

The golf resort had made plans to build a golf course fit to host the Ryder Cup in June 2023. Last month Luton Hoo - who are owned by the Arora Group - were told they could proceed with the plans after the Government opted not to 'call in' the planning permission.

The Arora Group had previously been verbally open over the intentions to bring the Ryder Cup to their resort, with chairman Surinder Arora previously telling Luton Today last December: "Hosting the Ryder Cup, potentially in either 2031 or 2035 would raise the profile of the area to a global audience. The opportunity to bid to host a Ryder Cup at Luton Hoo is a very real and realistic ambition."

In the North West, Hulton Park in Bolton have also revealed their eagerness to play host to the matchplay in the near future, after revealing their own plans to build a Ryder Cup-fit golf course.

There had been some resistance to the proposal, but it received the backing of Bolton Council in December. "We are fully behind the bid to host the Ryder Cup in 2035," said deputy leader Cllr Akhtar Zama. "The argument has of course been going since 2018 and while we fully understand the concerns of local residents we think that now is the time to back this proposal."

A whole host of famous UK courses have host the Ryder Cup throughout the years. Following the turn of the century in 2000, the UK staged three out of four European-based Ryder Cups, with The Belfry playing host in 2002, Celtic Manor in 2010, before the trip to Gleneagles ten years ago.
