Chelsea star Sam Kerr's alleged racial harrassment of a police officer occurred following a dispute over a taxi fare in January of last year.

The Australian, widely regarded as one of the world's best players, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of using insulting, threatening or abusive words that caused alarm or distress to an officer.

Kerr, who is currently sidelined by a long-term knee injury, appeared at Kingston Crown Court on Monday via video link. Wearing a white T-shirt, she spoke only to confirm her name and enter a plea. She faces a four-day trial in February next year with two police officers expected to give evidence.

Despite initial reports claiming that the alleged incident had taken place earlier this year, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police has confirmed that it occurred in Twickenham in early 2023.

"Samantha Kerr, 30 (10.09.93) of Richmond, was charged via postal charge requisition on 21 January with a racially aggravated offence under Section 4A Public Order Act 1986," the Met spokesperson said.

"The charge relates to an incident involving a police officer who was responding to a complaint involving a taxi fare on 30 January 2023 in Twickenham."

Chelsea have not commented on the arrest but the Australian FA said they are "monitoring" the situation. "Football Australia is aware of the legal proceedings involving Sam Kerr in the United Kingdom," an AFA statement read. "As this is an ongoing legal matter, we are unable to provide further comment at this time.

"Our focus remains on supporting all our players, both on and off the field. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide support as appropriate."

Kerr joined Chelsea in 2019 and has scored 99 goals in 128 games. She has won four Women's Super League titles, three FA Cups and a pair of League Cups. Last month she agreed a contract extension but has already ruled out of the remainder of this season's Super League because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

In a nod to her high profile, last year she was nominated to carry the Australian flag at the coronation of King Charles and despite being injured was the star attraction for the home Women's World Cup.
