A Vietnamese grandmother claims she is the oldest person in the world at the age of 119 all thanks to her favourite food - porridge.

From southern Vietnam's Dong Nai Province, Trinh Thi Khong is allegedly the oldest person in the world. Local media reports that efforts are underway for her to be recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest person.

According to her birth documents, she was born in 1905 - which would make her not only the oldest person in Vietnam but two years older than Maria Branyas Morera of France, currently listed by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest person.

While she was originally from the province of Thanh Hoa, Khong has been living with her second daughter, named as Do Thi Ninh, 82, in Dong Nai since 2014. Khong's eldest son is over 90 years old and the family currently has 150 descendants including great-grandchildren.

Her family have described the 119-year-old as "normal unhealthy", and her diet consists mainly of porridge. She reportedly likes to reminisce about when she worked as a vendor to support her children. Her achievements have not gone unnoticed, with local officials giving her a certificate recognising her age in 2023, on the occasion of her 118th birthday.

Recently, a woman from South Africa who believed was the "world's oldest person" has died at the age of 128. Mother-of-seven Johanna Mazibuko, who lived through three centuries, reportedly died in her home in the North West Province of the country.

Her caregiver and daughter-in-law Thandiwe Wesinyana told News24 that she may have died from a stroke. The reports are unverified and claims of her being the oldest person in the world are not officially recognised. US-born Maria Branyas Morera was named the world’s oldest person by Guinness World Records in January, at age 115.

Local mayor James Tsolela previously said: "We have been checking and doing research to see who is the oldest. We can't find anyone her age. We do have her ID saying that. We have to try and put her in the book of Guinness Book of Records, so she can be properly honoured."

Despite being illiterate, she told News24 why she may have lived so long: "We lived so well on the farms. There were no problems."
