Andrew Robertson rescued a child from furious Nottingham Forest fans after Saturday’s controversial ending at the City Ground - with the boy, 6, then being paraded around the pitch by Liverpool players and manager Jurgen Klopp.

Left-back Robertson was filmed pulling the boy over a barrier and onto the pitch while dozens of angry Forest supporters screamed abuse at Liverpool staff. Several could be seen screaming “cheat” amid a barrage of expletives, with a member of the away side’s medical staff engaging in an argument with a group who were venting from behind the dugouts.

But amid that red-faced gathering was a youngster who Scotland captain Robertson spotted was upset. He was then led towards the away fans as he joined in the celebrations. Harvey Elliott was seen holding him aloft, while the boy was given a match worn shirt and posed for snaps with Klopp and Luis Diaz afterwards.

The Forest fans’ rage came after Darwin Nunez scored the game’s only goal in the 99th minute - after a mistake from referee Paul Tierney gave the away side possession one minute and 50 seconds earlier.

Furious Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis could face an FA probe after following Tierney down the tunnel in search of an explanation. Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg, in his new role as a consultant to the East Midlands club, was made available to the media afterwards in a deeply unusual step.

And he said: “The owner is quite upset because, of course, he has invested a lot of money in the club. He wants to see results and he feels that another decision has gone against the club.”

But the Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo was too angry to be drawn into a conversation about Tierney’s error. “I will not comment on the referee,” he said.

"Please don't insist on that, it will not be good. It will be a discussion point, for sure, in the week. I hope the decisions will be better. It is tough to take, I am proud of the boys. They did everything well until the last moment.

"We played a very good game, limited Liverpool, a fantastic team. They had chances, we had chances, it was a good game of football. We had clear chances and should improve. We played good but the team that are clinical get the advantage in the score. Our fans deserve to go home happy and they are not."
