An otherwise happily married woman feels deeply betrayed by her husband following her dying mother-in-law's revelation that he cheated on her for years. The devastated 37-year-old is now struggling to accept the bombshell news after more than a decade of being together.

The mum took to Reddit to explain her story, writing: "I have been with my husband, 40, for 13 years and married for nine years. We have two sons (six and eight) and have been happily married, with the usual ups and downs you would expect with a relationship. But we have been happy. Very happy."

Sadly, her mother-in-law was diagnosed with a terminal disease and according to the mum is expected to "pass very, very soon". Because of this, the US-based family recently flew out to Australia, where the in-laws live, to spend time with the husband's parents.

The post went on: "They used to fly over and stay with us all the time before mother-in-law got sick. I love my mother- and father-in-law, they have been amazing grandparents and very lovely to me. Yesterday, my husband and father-in-law looked after the kids, while my mother-in-law and I had a spa day.

"When we were driving home she started getting very upset and she ended up getting me to pull over. Then she dropped the news." The elder woman revealed that her son was still in a relationship with his ex-partner when he first met the mum - and he carried on seeing her behind her back.

She explained: "I came to Australia on a working holiday at a snow resort and my husband was working at the same place. We quickly fell in love, he came to the US for the next season. We did that for a few years around the world before settling down.

"Mother-in-law has just revealed that he had a long term (four years) girlfriend at the time. He was driving back every few weeks to see her, and she apparently visited once. According to mother-in-law, she wasn't a huge fan of the girlfriend but has felt terrible keeping this secret for so long, and wanted to get it off her chest before she passed."

The furious mum said he "basically up and left Australia" and ceased contact with everyone he knew there, including his childhood friend and ex-partner, before his parents moved to the US for a while. She added: "There were so many lies. He said he used to visit his parents on those trips the year we first met, no he was f*****g his girlfriend for four months. Going on dates. Hanging out with her family. She VISITED FOR DAYS!!!"

Her husband's deception has left her unsure of what to do with her life, caught between ever trusting him again and breaking up with him. She admitted: "I don't really know how to feel right now. I feel so betrayed and lost. I can't trust him again, but I don't think I could be a single mom. I feel so lost right now," before adding, "I haven't spoken with my husband yet, but I am going to approach the situation gently."

Dozens of Reddit users offered their thoughts on the mum's awful predicament, as one advised: "Your mother-in-law had a tough choice to make in telling you this. Please keep in mind, you’re only hearing her side of the story. This is not to say it’s untrue, but the details of what happened when should ideally be coming from your husband. You have to talk to him, but will she get to him first and tell him you know?"

Another echoed this sentiment and said: "Don't be too quick to run to lawyers, I suggest talking it out with your husband." But some were less forgiving towards the husband's alleged infidelity and chided: "Ditch him and take him to the cleaners. Guaranteed he is still cheating. You deserve better," and simply, "crucify him".
