A man has died and three children have been hospitalised after a five vehicle crash involving a fire engine.

The vehicles involved included included a grey Peugeot 308, a silver Kia Sportage, a black Mercedes, a grey Volkswagen Transporter and a red Scania Fire Engine during the horror smash on the A16 in Lincolnshire at around 12.40pm on Sunday. Today, motorists are still being asked to avoid the area, while forensic work is carried out.

An air ambulance landed in the area at about 1.20pm yesterday and made a trip to Peterborough City Hospital at 1.50pm. Three children involved in the crash were all taken to hospital. The full circumstances of the incident are not yet known.

It is the second collisionon the same road to have taken place in recent days. The road is closed between the B1397 Station Road (Kirton) to the A17 Station Road (Sutterton roundabout, Sutterton). Police have warned motorists to avoid the area as delays are likely.

Lincolnshire Police said: "We attended a five-vehicle collision on the A16 near to the junction with the B1040 yesterday afternoon. The collision was reported to the Force Control Room just after 12.40pm on Sunday 3 March. Sadly, one man has died. His family have been informed by officers. Three children have been taken to hospital.

"The vehicles involved are a grey Peugeot 308, a silver Kia Sportage, a black Mercedes, a grey Volkswagen Transporter and a red Scania Fire Engine. The grey Peugeot, silver Kia Sportage, black Mercedes and Fire Tender were all travelling southbound in the direction of Peterborough.

"The VW Transporter was travelling north towards Spalding. The road was closed at the time and reopened later in the evening.

"We are appealing for information and dashcam or other video footage that may have been recorded from vehicles that were travelling in the area prior to the collision and have recorded any of the vehicles involved. We would also like to speak to anyone who has witnessed the collision or has recorded footage that will assist our investigation. "

Meanwhile, on Monday morning, a second "serious" multi-vehicle crash has taken place on the A16 near Kirton, with traffic moving slowly as a result. The road is currently closed in both directions.

A spokesperson for Lincolnshire Police told The Mirror: "The A16 between Sutterton and Kirton is closed after a serious collision this morning. Emergency services are on the scene and motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible as delays are likely."
