Lovebirds hit jackpot after getting engaged while playing bingo
A pair of lovebirds have hit the jackpot after getting engaged - while playing bingo.
Dennis Buck said he popped the question to delighted Jenny Grimmer after they fell "madly in love" with each other in their later years. The pair, both 76, met before Christmas at their weekly Age UK centre game sessions, in Grimbsy, Lincolnshire, and became an item after going out for a meal.
And just a few months later, Dennis purchased a ring from a nearby shop before getting down on one knee to ask Jenny to be his new bride. He said: "Everything was in the right place, and we just fell in love... We love each other madly. I got on my knees and proposed to her. I got down and said 'Will you accept this ring for our engagement' She said 'Yes'."
"I proposed to her at Age UK as we both love playing bingo and we go every Monday." Dennis, who served in the Royal Engineers and then worked as a miner, said he was particularly struck by the great-grandmother-of-three's looks and smile. And it was not long before the widower, who has previously been married twice, decided to woo Jenny by taking her out for dinner.
Dennis said: "I go to Age UK in the top town, and we met there just before Christmas. We got on well. I asked her if she wanted to go for a meal and we went from there... Her looks, her smile, everything - everything was in the right place, and we just fell in love." Dennis, who has no kids, said he asked Jenny a few months later if she would be willing to get engaged - and was thrilled when she said yes.
Shop prices 'are yet to peak and will remain high' as inflation hits new heightsAnd on February 19, he officially popped the question during the weekly bingo session where they had first clapped eyes at each other. Dennis said: "I asked her about getting engaged and she said 'yes'. It went from there. I got the ring in the precinct. I felt it was the right time, but we had to wait a fortnight for the ring to be altered to her size."
Former shop worker Jenny told a local paper that she had fallen in love with Dennis due to his charming smile. And she only wished that they had met earlier as they had grown up living in towns just miles apart in South Yorkshire. She said: "My first impression of Dennis was that he was very nice, I think I fell for his smile over bingo. I thought, 'That's a nice smile he's got'.
"I'm originally from Rotherham and Dennis is originally from Doncaster, only about 14 miles away, so I was wishing we'd met when we were in our twenties. When he proposed I was surprised, more than anything. I love everything about him." Dennis said the pair, from Grimbsy, had not decided on a date for their wedding and were taking their announcement step by step.
He added: "We're not getting married yet - we have to wait a bit. We'll most likely get married later on. We've not set a date yet." A representative from the couple's local Age UK centre said: "We wish them all the luck in the world & can't wait to buy our hats for the wedding."
