A huge Hollywood movie star from the eighties, who starred in some of the biggest films of the decade, looked unrecognisable as she returned to the spotlight this week 44 years later.

Debra Winger, who is now 68, found fame for her roles in An Officer and a Gentleman, Terms of Endearment and Shadowlands, and she received plenty of nominations for the Best Actress Academy Awards before winning National Society of Film Critics Best Actress gong for her performance in Terms of Endearment.

She received recognition by BAFTA and the Golden Globes for her role as Sissy in bit 80s hit Urban Cowboy, with Debra opting for brunette hair that hung in loose waves and was styled with a fringe. She was unrecognisable to this when she appeared at the Drive Away Dolls premiere in New York, in February.

While she still had her curls, Debra was looking resplendent with hair a silver grey and she wore chunky glasses, as she oozed style. After the heights of her Hollywood fame, Debra decided to take a break from being in front of the camera and decided to start working behind the scenes.

Speaking about her time away from the limelight, Debra said: "I wanted out for years. I got sick of hearing myself say I wanted to quit. It's like opening an interview with 'I hate interviews!' Well, get out! I stopped reading scripts and stopped caring. People said, 'We miss you so much.' But in the last [so many] years, tell me a film that I should have been in. The few I can think of, the actress was so perfect."

Despite taking a break from acting, Debra caused controversy when she reportedly refused to work with pop star Madonna, when she was making her first forays into the film world. In 1992, Debra was set to be cast in A League Of Their Own when she was told that Madonna was also going to be cast. Debra then dropped out of the film as she didn't consider Madonna to be serious enough with her acting for her to be a co-star.

After leaving the film industry, Debra wrote a book and was also a lecturer at Harvard University before finally coming back on screen between 2016 and 2020 in Netflix comedy, The Ranch.
