Forest ref consultant Mark Clattenburg slams Paul Tierney after Liverpool error
Mark Clattenburg rounded on Paul Tierney after the City Ground ref row saying: ‘You got it wrong.’
The ex-Premier League official - now working for the east Midlands club as a consultant - said that the man-in-the-middle erred as Forest suffered a gut-wrenching defeat in the ninth minute of added time against Liverpool. Darwin Nunez glanced home Alexis MacAllister’s cross - sparking scenes of wild celebration from the visitors.
Seconds earlier, play had been stopped by the Wigan official after a head injury to Ibrahima Konate inside Liverpool’s area. Forest’s Callum Hudson-Odoi was in possession near the left flank but, upon the restart, Tierney told Liverpool to carry on - instead of ordering the ball to be played back to Forest. The Reds did and the game ended in uproar when the Uruguayan netted.
In the aftermath, Forest’s assistant manager Steven Reid was dismissed for comments made to Tierney as the official left the field. And then club owner Evangelos Marinakis confronted him in the corridor outside the referees’ room as passions threatened to spill over.
Clattenburg has been employed as a go-between after Forest were left on the wrong end of a string of decisions. He said: “As a club, Forest feel there have been one or two decisions that have gone against them - Newcastle United, West Ham - decisions that the PGMOL have accepted that there has been a mistake.
Chelsea complete record-breaking Enzo Fernandez transfer after deadline day rush“If the referee is to stop the game for a head injury if he feels there is one. He’s rightly allowed to stop it. However, the ball has to go back to the team that has possession. And Nottingham Forest clearly had that possession.
“He did exactly the same in the first half however it was a different situation. The ball was closer to the penalty area and the Nottingham Forest was towards the corner flag. Nottingham Forest should have had the ball back. Instead, Liverpool have gone upfield and scored from it.”
Clattenburg also explained how upset Marinakis was with the decision - correctly, as it turns out.
He added: "I’m yet to advise the club on it - but this is a matter of law. I can explain the matter of law. That’s what I’m there for - to advise the board and the football club. I haven’t spoken to the referee. I haven’t gone in to see Paul. He wouldn’t allow me in. I’ll leave that to the officials from Nottingham Forest to do.
“I’ll advise them what to say - we talked about the incident. Everybody’s upset. They fought hard all game and when you lose a game like that people are frustrated. The owner’s quite upset because he has invested a lot of money in the football club and he wants to see results, he feels that another decision has gone against the club and quite rightly he’s upset.
“I think everyone is sad that they have lost in this way and hopefully their luck will change in the future. They changed the law because we didn’t want a contested drop ball. When that was the law, players used to swing legs and people could get injured.
“I understand the law change. But the law is clear that if the ball is outside the penalty area you get possession back and the other team goes back one metre. In that crucial moment, Forest have the ball in the corner, so they can absorb the time to see the time out to get the result. The ball has gone back to Liverpool, they don’t get it back and there’s a corner. There’s an argument that they could clear their lines but it’s from that initial moment and players lose concentration because they feel there has been an injustice.
“I’ll be sitting down with the board and the owners to try and explain what’s happened and it’s difficult to do that at the moment. We’ll be speaking with the PGMOL and the Premier League and we’ll discuss the correct course of action soon.”
