Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are "paranoid" about their safety as they know they have "stirred up a huge amount of ill feeling" after issuing multiple attacks against the Royal Family, an author has said.

According to royal expert Tom Quinn, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were "shocked" by how fiercely they were attacked on social media after speaking out about their unhappiness as part of the Firm. The author believes that the attacks they received made them feel like they need more protection.

He also added that Harry spent his life assuming "that he is special", just as all members of the Royal Family do, and despite stepping down, he still feels like he is a senior royal who needs protection. However, Mr Quinn said Harry appears "completely blind" to public sentiment in the UK on this issue, and doesn't seem to understand why people are not happy for their taxpayer money to pay for security for someone who lives in another country and doesn't work for the Royal Family.

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, Mr Quinn said: "Harry and Meghan are also paranoid about safety because they are aware they have stirred up a huge amount of ill feeling – they were shocked by how fiercely they were attacked on social media after their attacks on the royal family. The attacks, which really scared them, massively increased their sense of victimhood and their sense that they need protection.

"Throughout his life Harry has assumed – like all members of the Royal Family – that he is special and he assumes everyone agrees with him. When he ceased to be a working royal, the sense of being special did not go away. It's almost as if he doesn't really believe that ceasing to be a working Royal makes any difference.

"In his own mind, he is still a senior Royal and therefore deserving of taxpayer support when it comes to security. He is completely blind to public sentiment in the UK on this – he finds it impossible to imagine that taxpayers might resent paying a bill for security for someone who lives in the States and does not work for the British royal family."

The author's comments came as Harry lost his High Court challenge against the Home Office over the government's decision to offer him a lower level of security when he visits the UK now that he is no longer a working royal. After announcing they were stepping down as senior royals back in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were told they would not be given the "same degree" of protection.

Instead of being offered the same levels as King Charles, Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales, they were offered similar protection to less senior royals including Princess Anne and Prince Edward. The Duke of Sussex - who now lives in the US with his family - took legal action but on Wednesday he was told his challenge was unsuccessful.

After the ruling, Harry said he will appeal with a legal spokesperson for the Duke saying he "hopes to obtain justice from the Court of Appeal". They said: "The Duke of Sussex will appeal today's judgment which refuses his judicial review claim against the decision-making body Ravec, which includes the Home Office, the Royal Household and the Met Police. Although these are not labels used by Ravec, three categories – as revealed during the litigation – comprise the ‘Ravec cohort’: the Role Based Category, the Occasional Category and the Other VIP Category.

"The Duke is not asking for preferential treatment, but for a fair and lawful application of Ravec's own rules, ensuring that he receives the same consideration as others in accordance with Ravec’s own written policy. In February 2020, Ravec failed to apply its written policy to the Duke of Sussex and excluded him from a particular risk analysis. he duke’s case is that the so-called 'bespoke process' that applies to him, is no substitute for that risk analysis. The Duke of Sussex hopes he will obtain justice from the Court of Appeal, and makes no further comment while the case is ongoing."
