A small, charming town in the Canary Islands has been declared one of the most beautiful spots across the whole region.

Unlike popular destinations Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, this hidden gem is less crowded with tourists, making it a peaceful retreat. The Canary Islands are a top choice for British holidaymakers who love sun, sand and sea. The popular islands attract lots of UK tourists every year, mainly because of the hot weather all year round.

But the popularity has led to some problems, as locals say the main tourist areas are too packed. If you're looking for a quiet spot on the Canary Islands away from the hustle and bustle of places like Santa Cruz de Tenerife or Las Palmas, there's a perfect village you may not have heard of.

Teror is a hidden treasure on the island of Gran Canaria and is an ideal destination for UK tourists to visit. Teror boasts streets filled with pretty coloured houses in bright turquoise, pink and yellow that shine in the sunlight.. The town is in the mountains, so the natural beauty around it might take your breath away, reports The Daily Star.

Plus, it's a great place for hiking. There are multiple areas to explore, such as the Osorio Estate, with mountains, gullies, farmland, and forests. A review on Tripadvisor shares: "Loved this extensive set of gardens and land. A real sense of quiet amidst the gardens and grottos and farmland. We visited for 45 minutes but you could spend hours walking here."

The local market in the town square is a great place to find local products, snacks and clothes. You can find special treats like cakes baked by the nuns at Monasterio Cisterciense monastery, sweet buns and anise cakes. Or, walk over to The Canarian Perfume House (Casa del Perfume Canario) where resident perfume experts mix up unique scents – and find your signature one with the help of the specialists.

You can also find wine and presents for friends, or even amazing "volcanic jewellery" made from the island's volcanic lava. The speciality jewellery includes olivine, a mineral known as peridot, as well as volcanic Quartz like agates or lapis lazuli.

"Definitely want a quick step in in a nice little courtyard with some restaurants and shopping around it. It dazzles inside a little more than the outside shows," one person said. "Beautiful stunning and wonderful church," another visitor commented.

Alongside the basilica, you will also find Museum Casa Museo de los Patrones de la Virgen, which displays paintings, photographs, weapons and antique furniture once belonging to the nobles of the island. Despite Teror being in the mountains, the island of Gran Canaria boasts a number of stunning beaches which you can drive to in around 45 minutes.

Getting to Gran Canaria is easy and affordable, with return flights from the UK starting from just £41 on Skyscanner. There are also some great deals on accommodation, with double rooms at Hotel de Pinto available for £51 a night and Villa Santini, which offers barbecue facilities and city views, for £77 a night.

Gran Canaria enjoys average highs of 23C, even in March, and temperatures regularly exceed 20C throughout the day, according to holiday-weather. com. However, it's worth noting that locals and residents have expressed concerns about the increasing number of tourists visiting the islands and some have advised visitors to "stay away". Therefore, it may be advisable to avoid the most popular tourist spots.

Experts in town planning argue that overloaded tourism is pushing the Canary Islands to the "brink of collapse". An expat talking to the Daily Star voiced the same worries as they see problems for the locals all year long, not just during holiday season.

One Tenerife local argued that it's a lack of infrastructure causing the area's downfall – from congested roads to concentrated residential areas and not enough roads. Meanwhile, protestors have caused further chaos by blocking roads and thoroughfares.
